Residents can now say their say about the proposal to convert Hofmeyer Street in front of Fanie Theron Primary School in Kraaifontein into a one-way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This one-way conversion and other traffic calming implementations will improve traffic circulation past Fanie Theron Primary School during peak hours and provide more safety for learners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City\u2019s road infrastructure management last week commenced a public participation process to give residents an opportunity to comment on the proposal and residents have until 6 July to submit their comments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The process was put in motion at Subcouncil 2 by Ward Councillor Rhynhardt Bresler about a year ago following a myriad of complaints about the general road safety around the school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMany parents and residents expressed their worry about children\u2019s lives being endangered by the chaotic traffic conditions around the school, with kids being dropped off and picked up.\u201d says Bresler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the motion brought by Bresler the City did a traffic impact study on the streets around the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey came back to me with three suggestions, to raise the pedestrian crossing, to add another speed hump in Krige street and to change Hofmeyer into a one way street. A one-way street past the school will solve the flow of traffic and congestion that has caused parents a lot of headaches,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following these changes, Bresler says the next phase will be to get permission from the education department to move school fencing in order to build a pavement in Krige Street between Bree Street and the first school gate. Presently, children have to walk down the busy street to get to the parking area. The proposed one-way along Hofmeyer Street will flow from the direction of Duif Street towards Herte Street, with signage indicating the \u201cschool zone\u201d area. A raised pedestrian crossing is also proposed at Gate 2 of the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas says public participation forms an essential part of local governance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis process provides residents with the opportunity to comment on the proposal aimed at improving the safety and traffic flow around the school. We want to hear what people have to say about the proposal and I encourage all to please submit their comments,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
