The Knitting Club at the Milnerton Library is in full swing again after the covid pandemic had stopped everything. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The past month the club donated baby knitted goods to the Tygerberg Hospital Children\u2019s Trust for premature babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The knitted goods included bootees, vests, caps and mittens and were knitted by five retired pensioners from Milnerton, besides the chief librarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI took over the knitting club in March 2020 and we are six active members. We meet once a month at the library, usually on a Tuesday at 10:00, but the dates vary. We rely on donations of wool from patrons and other organisations. Before covid we used to get wool donations, but now this has dried up a bit,\u201d says Mae Kuscus, chief librarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During Mandela Month the knitting club donated the baby goods on Mandela Day (18 July) to Tygerberg Hospital and a bag of soft toys that was donated by a patron of the library. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Friday 22 July knitted beanies and scarves were donated to Johanna Kotze of the charity organisation Locals Helping Locals in Bothasig, who helps senior citizens, hence the scarves and beanies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe demographics of the group makes buying wool out of their pocket not an option. We\u2019ve previously supported the Milnerton Community Action Network (CAN) by knitting Easter baskets, which were filled with marshmallow eggs and distributed to areas of Phoenix and Joe Slovo and worked closely with Janine McEvoy in this regard. Last year we gave a sizeable donation of blankets, beanies, scarves and mittens to Huis Zonnekus in Milnerton and Charlaine Smit received the donation on behalf of Huis Zonnekus. On Monday 25 July we donated another batch of stuff to Tygerberg Hospital, but unfortunately they did not have space and time to unpack all the items. However I made a list beforehand for our own records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCurrently we\u2019re focussing on items for the teens at Tygerberg Children\u2019s Trust, knitting and crocheting scarves, beanies and mittens. We\u2019re also still knitting for the babies, as this is an ongoing need. I need to mention that we receive donations of knitted items from the community as well, and this is highly appreciated. We can assure them that their donations are going to worthy recipients,\u201d Kuscus says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
