Over 114 000 tonnes of plastic end up in landfills, oceans and freshwater resources worldwide during the festive season, according to local non-profit-organisation (NPO) Save our Schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the light shed on the heavy water footprint associated with Christmas and the impact it has on our water recourses the NPO on Thursday held a \u201cBare Tree\u201d community event for underprivileged children in Kraaifontein, while at the same time sharing the joy of Christmas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe whole idea of the Bare Tree is too take an eco-friendly wooden Christmas tree and turn it into a decorated symbol of hope,\u201d says the NPO\u2019s Amy Burrow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bare Tree event was held at Bophelo Educare in Kraaifontein and welcomed 200 young children from the five early childhood development centres the NPO supports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt was a heart-warming day of learning and gifting. Donations received from brands such as Sorbet, Pick n Pay, AGT Foods, Cosmetix, Superdry and Jeep ensured each child received a toy this Christmas season. We further spread the message of hope by placing five decorated Christmas trees within each early learning development centre,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CEO of Save Our Schools Shelley Humphreys says the NPO has focussed its work on improving access to and knowledge around water, sanitation and hygiene within the Kraaifontein area for the last four and a half years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
