Bothasig photographer and adventurer Derek Antonio Serra and his wife, Akhona, recently returned back home from their almost two-week-long journey to the South Pole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The husband and wife joined the ship Ocean Adventurer which is ran by Quark Expeditions on an 11-day trip which included a landing on the seventh continent at Portal Point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also included excursions on inflatable boats to Danco Island, Aitcho Island and Peterman Island and cruises in Foyn Harbour and Kayak Bay, Derek says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The local couple are no strangers to adventurous travels, having previously visited 16 countries together including the Galapagos, the Amazon, Fiji and an active volcano in Vanuato amongst others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAntarctica is the one place on earth that few people get to visit, as only about 50 000 people travel there each year, usually on expedition ships carrying less than 200 passengers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proudly South African<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Derek, former chair of the Bothasig Residents Association, says while in Antarctica they proudly raised the South African flag, and were made aware that very few South Africans ever visit the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also photographed several types of penguins, numerous whales including Orca\u2019s, as well as seals and sea birds like albatrosses and giant petrels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe two-day crossing from Ushuaia to Antarctica on the notorious Drake Passage was quite rough, but was worth it in the end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
