David Cornelson, founder and director of Project 021, a registered non-profit organisation based in Kuils River, is passionate about creative arts and knows the power thereof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Besides offering dance and drama classes at Sarepta Sports Hall, Project 021 also functions at various schools across the Cape Flats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cornelson says they use the disciplines of performing arts to develop young people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is an appealing way to introduce a sense of discipline and focus in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Project 021 currently works with over 300 young people on a weekly basis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe use creative arts as an intervention method to refocus, up-skill, develop and mentor young people who are continually at risk to be trapped in a lifestyle of gangs and substance abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe believe that a purpose is bestowed on every individual to reach the heights which their dreams draw them to,\u201d says Cornelson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the correct nurturing and motivation, we know they can be set in a positive direction to achieve their unique goals,\u201d Cornelson says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the past 10 years hundreds of young people have been impacted by opportunities offered through Project 021 to develop their creative skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAlthough we are aware of the challenges, we are also motivated by the positive results and feedback we receive,\u201d Cornelson says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cornelson counts hosting their annual competition for dance crews \u2013 021BDC \u2013 for 10 consecutive years among Project 021\u2019s achievements. He has seen it grow to attract hundreds of young dancers to participate. Not even the Covid-19 pandemic could stop the determined young dancers from practising and competing at the event, he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Project 021 has entered drama productions to the Zabalaza Theatre Festival several times. \u201cOn four occasions we reached the final stage of the festival which allowed our actors the opportunity to perform at the Baxter Theatre.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cornelson says their achievements at the Zabalaza Festival include being nominated for \u201cBest Ensemble\u201d for the production Given to fly<\/em> in 2018, and winning \u201cBest Script\u201d for Colour Burst<\/em> in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe exposure to such opportunities has an enormous positive impact on the confidence of our young participants,\u201d he says. In October 2022 Project 021 was nominated by the provincial department of culture, arts and sport in the category of \u201cMost Innovative Contribution in Dance Discipline\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking back over the past decade Cornelson says it has been an unbelievable journey. \u201cI would say the highlight of it all is the amazing people whom we have had the privilege to meet and work with. As much as we strive to inspire and motivate others, we find ourselves being motivated by the openness and willingness of others to jump in and get involved.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Project 021 is hosting a 10th anniversary showcase event on Freedom Day, Thursday 27 April from 16:00 to 18:00 at the Sarepta Community Hall.
