Goodwood residents who wanted speed humps on Dellwyn Road were recently advised that their various requests were denied. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This came about after several traffic calming requests were submitted to the Transport Network Management Department by Sub-council 4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The requests were submitted by the public, as well as the relevant ward councillors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The request stated speeding traffic as motivation for the request for speed humps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the City responded to the request in March after conducting the investigation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outcome of the technical assessment concluded that Dellwyn Road is a class 5 road situated in a medium-density residential area in Goodwood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assessment indicated that there are no schools or any public amenities located along the length of Dellwyn Road, indicating that the potential for vehicular\/pedestrian conflict is low. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The City of Cape Town\u2019s traffic calming policy addresses schools\u2019 recorded hazardous locations and public facilities, where significant volumes of pedestrians cross the road at a given point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Complaints <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Based on the above and having considered the traffic calming policy, traffic calming is not supported at Dellwyn Road, the City says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other than the mentioned request, no other complaints were received for Dellwyn Road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to ward councillor Cecile Janse van Rensburg, the response is based on the City of Cape Town\u2019s traffic calming policy which states the following:<\/div>\n

  • Traffic calming measures should first and foremost be provided to protect the most vulnerable users where they occur in the largest numbers, specifically in the vicinity of public facilities. The roadsadjacent to and leading to schools should therefore be the primary focus of the TCT traffic calming programme.<\/li>\n
  • The policy provides for automatic approval of calming measures on residential roads adjacent to public facilities and approval of measures on other residential roads subject to the satisfaction of certain criteria indicating a high potential for conflict between road users.<\/li>\n
  • Traffic calming measures may, subject to the other policy directives, be implemented on a class 4 Collector Street and class 5 Local Street in a residential area in the vicinity of public facilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
