What started as eight ladies deciding to start knitting during covid led is now a branch of knitters, knitting for charity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ladies of the relatively new \u201cGive a Stitch Thornton Place\u201d branch invited the \u201cGive a Stitch\u201d branch to collect items on Sunday 9 July. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea was to hand over knitted and crocheted items which the knitters had completed over the last few months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The items consisted of baby booties, beanies, cardigans, blankets, and also colourful blankets, scarves with pockets and beanies for the residents of old age homes who receive a Sassa pension. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Included with the items were also twiddle muffs for residents who suffer from dementia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUsually, on our visits to Thornton Place, we share the plights of the babies\u2019 homes which we visited,\u201d Schyrel Naidoo says, founder of the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis time, I shared some of the struggles faced by Mater Domini Home. Miraculously, they are still managing to keep the doors open. After our discussions, wool was distributed to the knitters for them to continue with their passion, which is knitting for charity. In conclusion during our visit to Thornton Place, tea, coffee and treats were enjoyed by all.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comfort and warmth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Naidoo says there is a great need for knitted items for the abandoned and abused babies who end up at children\u2019s homes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here they can receive a new lease on life by the love and care of the staff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGive a Stitch\u201d reaches out to these organisations to bring comfort to the babies by donating knitted items,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany of their senior citizens, mainly in receipt of a Sassa pension, are placed in old age homes by their families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSadly, some of these residents never get to see their loved ones again,\u201d Naidoo says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur donations to the old age homes are to remind the residents that we have not forgotten them and try to remind them that some care about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naidoo said donations such as wool, babies clothing, babies items like soap, shampoo, lotion, talc and diapers are welcomed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senior citizens appreciate donations like adult diapers, shampoo, soap, body lotion, talc, deodorant, luxuries and items for dementia residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
