Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most
\ncommon psychiatric disorder in children, affecting approximately 1 in 20, and
\nfollows about 65% of them into adulthood, affecting about 1 million adults in
\nSouth Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, ADHD is a condition often misdiagnosed and plagued
\nby myths and misunderstandings, particularly regarding treatment. The condition
\nhampers sufferers\u2019 educational performance, self-esteem, relationships, and
\nwork productivity, and leads to increased risk of other psychiatric disorders,
\nreduced social functioning, delinquency, and substance abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the 4th South African Multidisciplinary ADHD Congress
\nheld 30 August to 2 September, hosted by Stellenbosch Business School in
\npartnership with the Goldilocks and the Bear Foundation, international and
\nlocal multi-disciplinary professionals comprising of psychiatrists,
\npaediatricians, general practitioners, psychologists, and occupational
\ntherapists will gather virtually to present the latest research and optimal
\nmanagement insight of ADHD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congress convenor and head of healthcare leadership at
\nStellenbosch Business School, Prof Renata Schoeman, says lack of knowledge and
\nfunding for treatment are two of the main access barriers to diagnosis and
\ntreatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is estimated that 17% of children and adolescents face
\nmental health challenges in low- and middle-income countries whilst half of all
\nmental health disorders develop before the age of 14. However, only 1% of all
\npsychiatric services are dedicated to child and adolescent mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLack of awareness of ADHD and other mental health
\ndifficulties, overburdened healthcare services, and the stigma surrounding
\nmental health, impedes the early identification of, and intervention for ADHD
\nand comorbid disorders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe congress aims to, given the prevalence of ADHD, as well
\nas the impact undiagnosed and untreated ADHD has on the scholastic,
\noccupational, emotional, financial and social well-being of individuals with
\nADHD, highlight the importance of advocacy and access to treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof Schoeman says in countries such as South Africa, only
\n5% of the health budget (13.8% of the GDP) is allocated to mental health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof Schoeman says 40 different ADHD-related sessions will
\nbe presented at the congress which serves as a platform for medical
\nprofessionals to share the latest research and engage in critical discussions
\nand debates in bridging the knowledge gap and barriers to accessing treatment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOver the years the congress has been a springboard for
\nrenewed interest in research in the field, as well as provided opportunities of
\nupskilling and engaging with healthcare professionals, ultimately improving the
\noutcome of all individuals with ADHD in our unique (Southern) African context.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ADHD is characterised by a persistent pattern of
\ninattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that impair development and
\nfunctioning, and are often coupled with behavioural, academic, social and
\nemotional problems that can lead to difficulties in interpersonal relationships
\nand in school and work performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Signs of inattention include difficulty in staying focused,
\nwandering off tasks, lacking persistence, being disorganised, poor time
\nmanagement and procrastination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyperactivity refers to excessive, inappropriate activity
\nsuch as constantly fidgeting, children talking or leaving their seat in class,
\noften \u201con the go\u201d and having difficulty playing quietly; while impulsivity
\nshows in poor self-control such as a short temper, social intrusiveness, making
\nspur-of-the-moment decisions without considering the consequences, and
\naddictive behaviours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough some children appear to \u2018outgrow\u2019 ADHD, the
\ncondition does continue into adolescence in most cases and it is more a case of
\nsome becoming more skilled in managing the symptoms and, as adults,
\ncompensating for their ADHD-related impairment through lifestyle and career
\nchoices,\u201d says Prof Schoeman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cADHD can continue to have a severe impact, with many adults
\nwith ADHD going untreated for most of their lives while being at increased risk
\nof other psychiatric conditions, substance abuse and work-related problems
\ncaused by their poor time management and organisational skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof Schoeman emphasises the importance of consulting a
\nhealth professional such as a paediatrician, psychiatrist, or psychologist for
\na formal diagnosis of ADHD, and to determine whether there are other causes for
\nthe symptoms (such as sleep deprivation, depression, anxiety, excessive
\nscreentime, or medical conditions), and to obtain appropriate treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe negative impact of ADHD on a person\u2019s overall quality
\nof life can be substantially improved with the correct diagnosis and effective,
\nmulti-modal treatment, including medication, behavioural therapy and social and
\neducational support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
