{"id":49855,"date":"2023-09-06T09:45:07","date_gmt":"2023-09-06T07:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/jg-meiring-high-school-parents-concerned-20230906\/"},"modified":"2025-03-19T22:25:22","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T20:25:22","slug":"jg-meiring-high-school-parents-concerned-20230906","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/jg-meiring-high-school-parents-concerned-20230906\/","title":{"rendered":"JG Meiring High School parents concerned"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Parents of learners at JG Meiring High School are taking matters into their own hands as their pleas are falling on deaf ears. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 200 have formed a pressure group to get the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to intervene in a less-than-ideal situation at the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of their biggest concerns is the rapid staff turnover at JG Meiring and the negative impact it is having on their children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group is drafting a petition in the hopes that their grievances will be heard and resolved. \u201cOur children cannot even remember who taught them at the beginning of the year; they\u2019ve had up to six subject teachers in under a year,\u201d one parent, a member of the group, who asked not be named, said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>READ:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/news24\/community-newspaper\/tygerburger\/fights-getting-out-of-hand-school-in-goodwood-experiences-7-fights-in-one-week-20230503\">Fights \u2018getting out of hand\u2019: School in Goodwood experiences 7 fights in one week<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Millicent Merton, the WCED\u2019s spokesperson, said a total of 15 teachers had left the school in the last year for various reasons, such as SGB-appointed educators accepting WCED posts, accepting posts overseas, retirement, secondment and maternity leave. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the parents claim the number is more than 15. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the parents the principal boasts about her friends who protect her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The parents want a meeting with the principal and SGB; no AGM has been held in two years, the parents say. Only parent meetings with class teachers are held. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents are meeting to address the issue, and are standing up for their children and existing staff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merton said to her knowledge a petition was underway and the department will comment only after receiving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Parents who wants to know more about the petition
