{"id":49505,"date":"2023-10-04T14:48:26","date_gmt":"2023-10-04T12:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/kraaifontein-police-officers-escape-death-in-shipping-container-accident-on-n2-20231004\/"},"modified":"2025-03-19T22:33:47","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T20:33:47","slug":"kraaifontein-police-officers-escape-death-in-shipping-container-accident-on-n2-20231004","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/kraaifontein-police-officers-escape-death-in-shipping-container-accident-on-n2-20231004\/","title":{"rendered":"Kraaifontein police officers escape death in shipping-container accident on N2"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Four officers from Kraaifontein Police Station escaped death when the police van they were travelling in was crushed under the weight of a shipping container.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They were en route to the police shooting range in Cape Town.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Mowbray police registered a case of reckless and negligent driving for further investigation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Four officers, two men and two women, from Kraaifontein<br>\nPolice Station escaped death when the police van they were travelling in was<br>\ncrushed under the weight of a shipping container on Monday morning, 2 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four police vehicles were travelling alongside the container<br>\ntruck on the N2 between Jan Smuts Drive and Raapenburg Road when the accident<br>\noccurred just before 11:00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were en route to the police shooting range in Cape<br>\nTown, according to a reliable <em>TygerBurger<\/em> source. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kraaifontein police van was flattened and the other<br>\nthree vehicles severely damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emergency officials who were dispatched to the scene<br>\ntransported the victims to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the source three of the Kraaifontein officers,<br>\nalthough very traumatised, sustained light injuries and were released from<br>\nhospital on Monday evening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other female officer, who sat in the front passenger<br>\nseat, is said to be fully conscious and in a stable condition at Vincent<br>\nPallotti hospital. She suffered the worst of the impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from an eye injury and a cut on her face, <em>TygerBurger<\/em><br>\ncould not confirm the full extent of her injuries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The source said the truck was apparently travelling at some<br>\nspeed around a bend in the left-hand lane when it overturned and the container<br>\nfell off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi, Mowbray<br>\npolice registered a case of reckless and negligent driving for further<br>\ninvestigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlease note the circumstances surrounding the incident are<br>\nstill under investigation,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, we can confirm that nine victims<br>\nsustained injuries earlier today.
