That is what airports do,<br>\nas illustrated in the Unites States of America that has some 2 000 airports.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Ferguson the Johannesburg Cape Town route is<br>\nthe 10th busiest air route in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managing director of the airport Deon Cloete said the<br>\nreasons for the original construction of the airport by the allied forces 80<br>\nyears ago is still fully relevant today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is situated at the urban edge, at sea level with a<br>\n400-ft elevation that puts it out of the winter fog band,\u201d he said adding that<br>\nthe 5 km stretch of Joostenbergvlakte was sufficient to put down the 3.5 km<br>\nrunway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the emerging metropolis of Cape Town has shown much<br>\ngrowth in the northern suburbs, making it the core of \u201cthe growth point\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_31dacdfa\">\n<div class=\"text\">According to general manager Mark Wilkinson many factors necessitated the need of a second airport in Cape Town. More accessible air transport is needed to improve air access in a region where slot constraints during peak hours at CTIA often escalate the price of air tickets. <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith a fast-growing city that is isolated from the north, a<br>\nsecond airport it is absolutely needed. Passengers drive airlines and there is<br>\na need in this area, from here and up into the West Coast.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the placement of the airport will<br>\nsubstantially reduce fuel consumption and the amount of back-up fuel that needs<br>\nto be carried, which translates to a 5% reduction of carbon emissions per<br>\nflight.&nbsp;Moreover, he says the new airport will be a temporary relief in<br>\ncase of closures at CTIA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Socio-economic driving factors for the project was reduced<br>\ncosts of flying, job creation and more accessible air transport for the nearby<br>\ncatchment areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development is currently being processes in the<br>\nEnvironmental Impact Assessment (EIA), to which the first round of public<br>\nresponses closed on 8 December. A second round will follow next year, with the<br>\nstart of construction anticipated for 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cloete said positive feedback was received from some nearby<br>\ncommunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs developers we must show the advantage of the development<br>\noutweighs the disadvantages,\u201d he said. \u201cWe continuously engage with
