{"id":47547,"date":"2024-03-06T12:18:48","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T10:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/new-visionary-takes-the-helm-20240305-2\/"},"modified":"2025-03-19T23:42:02","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T21:42:02","slug":"new-visionary-takes-the-helm-20240305-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/new-visionary-takes-the-helm-20240305-2\/","title":{"rendered":"New visionary takes the helm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Mitchells Plain Titans Running Club has elected a new executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking the reins as chair, Andr\u00e9 Rix brings a love for athletics and a string of achievements to the position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten years ago this year he joined the club, which was established 18 years ago, saying on his election \u201c(I want to) create an overall inclusive buzz in Mitchells Plain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rix\u2019s plans include getting members to participate in a variety of activities in their numbers. \u201cI want us to plan and participate in all four disciplines of athletics \u2013 race walking, cross-country, track and field and road running, where juniors, seniors, masters can get to know each other on and off the track. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe would like people to participate in their numbers in all leagues of all disciplines, and we hope at least to groom and nurture five athletes to make Western Province Colours to have representation in each discipline,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growth in membership is also key, Rix said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must maintain athletes and hoping to have a few make athletics their career and not lose them to football, netball, rugby, tennis or gangsterism and drugs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new executive was elected in January and will serve until 2026. The executive is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>chair: Andr\u00e9 Rix;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>deputy chair: Isadore Ducket;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>treasurer: Lester Esau;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>secretary: Zoelfah Ryklief;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>trustee: Clinton Johnson and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>race director: Mark Wessels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Portfolio heads are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>head coach: Deon Heubner;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assistant coach: Donovan Davids;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>licensing officer: Leonita Fillies-Trimble;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ladies\u2019 captain: Juliana Smith;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>men\u2019s captain: Anees Noordien and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>head of social team: Crissy Valentine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is important so that the government can see there\u2019s a need to build a athletics track in the area,\u201d says Rix. \u201cTo save a life. It\u2019s to lower the crime rate a child in sport is a child out of court. To eradicate the scourge of gangsterism and violence in the vulnerable community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among other drives the club hope to also raise funds for their own 22-seater bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club is open to all fitness levels.
