{"id":46015,"date":"2024-06-06T15:18:33","date_gmt":"2024-06-06T13:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/major-water-pipe-upgrade-in-durbanville-20240606-2\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T01:51:22","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T23:51:22","slug":"major-water-pipe-upgrade-in-durbanville-20240606-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/major-water-pipe-upgrade-in-durbanville-20240606-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Major water pipe upgrade in Durbanville"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"p\" id=\"U102132046267PJC\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<p>he main water pipeline in Wellway Park East in Durbanville is up for a major upgrade when \u2013\u2002only in the first of two phases of the project \u2013 about two kilometres of pipe will be replaced in the next four to five months.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<p>This area was scheduled for a pipe replacement after a spike in burst pipes in recent years, says Zahid Badroodien, the City of Cape Town\u2019s Mayco member for water and sanitation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"h6\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<h3>Site camp location<\/h3>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<p>The project was recently launched with an onsite commencement meeting at the site in Tambotie Street \u2013\u2002on the corner of Tambotie Street and Langeberg Road. This site will also be the site camp location for the duration of the project.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<p>The first phase with a total cost of about R4,9\u2009million (excluding VAT) will focus on the outside ring of Wellway Park East. It will include Dahlia Close, part of Tambotie Crescent and Primula Avenue.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<p>Phase 1 will be a combination of replacing 110\u2009mm and 160\u2009mm high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes and upsizing certain sections in the area, says Badroodien. The commencement of the second phase has been earmarked for early in the new financial year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"h6\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<h3>Run concurrently<\/h3>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<p>The cost of the second phase, which will run concurrently with the first phase once it has started, will be made available in due course. This phase will complete the remaining internal watermains, Badroodien says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<p>\u201cA trenchless method of rehabilitation will be used across the two projects. Pipe cracking is a far more cost-effective way of rehabilitating pipes and far less intrusive as it offers minimal disruption to above- ground activities, especially in built-up and well-developed areas,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<p>\u201cA new pipe made from high-density polyethylene is drawn along behind the cracking device, leaving the old pipe fragments surrounding the newly installed pipe in the ground.=<\/p>\n<div class=\"h6\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<h3><strong>Pipe cracking<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<p>\u201cPipe cracking is useful in areas where access for other methods is difficult, or not necessary, and offers the option of size for size pipe replacement, as well as the option of upsizing if the demand is greater in the area,\u201d Badroodien says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">Theresa Uys, Councillor for Ward 112, welcomed the start of the project for the pipe replacement, saying it would be a boost to the area and its
