The successful applicants for the 2024 Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition, organised and presented by the Tygerberg branch of the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT), were recently announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The annual competition, in its 35th year, has become one of the highlights on the music scene for young prodigies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chair of the SASMT Tygerberg, Hilda Boonzaaier, said they are thrilled with the quality of entries and the diversity of instruments received from students across South Africa and Namibia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are proud to announce our new collaboration with Stellenbosch University music department. The beautiful Endler Hall will be our home from 16 to 20 September. This collaboration will indeed introduce a new chapter to the rich history of our competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof Mario Nell, chair of the Stellenbosch University music department said it is the oldest institution of its kind in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition\u2019s commitment to identify, develop and provide public exposure to our country\u2019s outstanding young generation of classical musicians, fit hand in glove with the music department\u2019s commitment to reach out further into the school-going ages, and foster such young talent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The competition is currently the only one of its kind in South Africa and offers a unique opportunity for children aged 13 years and younger to compete against their peers from across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rigorous programme demands of participants that a high standard of quality is maintained, whilst providing them with a platform from which to gain invaluable performance experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A total of 49 participants made it through the auditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of these 22 are from the Western Cape, 19 from Gauteng, three from Namibia, two each from the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape, and one from the Free State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
