That is the estimated distance between Cape Town, South Africa and Morocco in North Africa via the Trans-Sahara Highway\/N1 according to the search engine Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Meryem Belkihel from Morocco who cycled from her home country to the Mother City however, her solo route was much longer, as she visited several countries along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trip was also well documented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MeghyemOutCity\" target=\"_blank\">via her social media pages<\/a>. On Saturday 29 June she posted a photo of herself at the iconic yellow frame at Eden on the Bay in Bloubergstrand with the words: \u201cPraise be to God, safely arrived in South Africa after a year and a half, and more than 20 000km and twenty countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Custom\" data-pos=\"Middle\" id=\"embed_e764f730\">\n<div class=\"custom\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"638\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FMeghyemOutCity%2Fposts%2Fpfbid04pyYLumAbqJizECKncJyfeQdiFFt8CWK3avgsQhHgkqqsUG3DTj7YsLr1F84YSpSl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden;\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The 29-year-old arrived in Cape Town after leaving Casablanca, Morocco, in January 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On her journey she visited Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Angola, and Namibia. She told <em>TygerBurger<\/em> that her next stop is Lesotho, our neighbouring country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt took me 18 months to reach Cape Town as I am trying to explore each country thoroughly. Cape Town is not my last destination, from here I plan to travel up to Mozambique and continue to explore the eastern part of Africa,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Images\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_0d2d3228\">\n<div class=\"slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-smallsrc=\"https:\/\/cdn.24.co.za\/files\/Cms\/General\/d\/11992\/f17445d8a4e3441cb024bfd36a0f1f35.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/60c7d56d8c94489b82820f91363ccf7d.jpg\" title=\"Meryem Belkihel while she was travelling through Sierra Leone.\"><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">Meryem Belkihel while she was travelling through Sierra Leone.<\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>She says she is taking a break for now in Cape Town, and she loves the city and need to recharge her batteries for the next leg of her journey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy next stop will be Lesotho,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-challenges\">Challenges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked about some of the challenges she may have experienced while travelling through Africa, she said: \u201cThe most challenging aspects of my journey have been dealing with malaria, bike problems, Visas, and delays. Despite not speaking Portuguese, I had a lot of fun interacting with locals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meryem says she is passionate about adventure and exploring the diverse cultures of Africa. \u201cOne of my goals is to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and empower more women along the way,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For inspiration on her last journey, she says, she had her family, friends and followers who have been incredibly supportive, even though she received a fair share of hate and negative comments. \u201cThe support from my community has been a source of strength for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Images\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_8925e4b8\">\n<div class=\"slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-smallsrc=\"https:\/\/cdn.24.co.za\/files\/Cms\/General\/d\/11992\/724805d3ed1748e780fdc47d175cfce0.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/cdb24974051e411bbe1c24dd1c77d810.jpg\" title=\"Meryem Belkihel shortly after she arrived in Cape Town.PHOTO: Colwyn Loggenberg\"><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">Meryem Belkihel shortly after she arrived in Cape Town.PHOTO: Colwyn Loggenberg<\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Meryem told <em>TygerBurger<\/em> that her trip through Africa was one of her most challenging adventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile I have had many crazy adventures before, like cycling around Morocco, crossing the desert with nomads and traversing the High Atlas Mountains with a friend, this journey is by far the craziest and most ambitious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked whether she would contemplate undertaking such a journey again, she commented: \u201cIf given the chance, I would love to do it again.
