{"id":45349,"date":"2024-07-12T06:00:48","date_gmt":"2024-07-12T04:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/artist-creates-mandela-portrait-using-faces-of-current-political-leaders-20240710\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T02:52:04","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T00:52:04","slug":"artist-creates-mandela-portrait-using-faces-of-current-political-leaders-20240710","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/artist-creates-mandela-portrait-using-faces-of-current-political-leaders-20240710\/","title":{"rendered":"Artist creates Mandela portrait using faces of current political leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"p\" id=\"U102207790286QQG\">\n<p><strong>Muizenberg-based artist Gavin Larkin created a unique portrait of Nelson Mandela using images from political posters ahead of the 2024 National Elections. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The piece, inspired by the changing political landscape, features current political leaders blended into Mandela\u2019s face. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Larkin hopes to inspire young artists to explore diverse artistic mediums and techniques.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Although the winds of change had been blowing through the political landscape and his art studio as the inspiration for his latest piece, Muizenberg-based artist Gavin Larkin couldn\u2019t have known just how right he would be.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>Wanting to paint a portrait of Nelson Mandela while using the faces of the current political leaders ahead of the 2024 National Elections, Larkin had used the posters of several political parties found around the area to bring Mandela to life.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>\u201cI did this piece of artwork for the South African General Election and it was to really focus on the election and expose what was about to happen and it actually did happen. I didn\u2019t know it at the time but it did happen,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_a7e928d4\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cI come out of the ad industry, I\u2019ve been a creative, I\u2019ve owned an ad agency for a long time, always coming up with ideas and I had this idea to paint Mandela and then take all the current politicians that we have been seeing on the lampposts, on the election posters, cut them out and actually blend them into Madiba\u2019s face. So, we got this lovely juxtaposition of Madiba 30 years ago and our current political people.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>Knowning that the Government of National Unity \u2013 or in some form \u2013 may have been a reality due to the African National Congress\u2019 failing position in the polls leading up to the election, the announcement of the results gave greater significance to the piece.<\/p>\n<div class=\"h6\">\n<h3>More detail<\/h3>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>At a glance, the iconic image of Nelson Mandela is evident. But on closer inspection, it reveals much more detail. With faces, slogans, hands and other parts of these posters used in the shadowing and colouration of the art work, it brings to life the juxtaposition Larkin hoped to achieve.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_b0b4604f\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cI knew that this was going to have some significance because the ANC weren\u2019t doing so well and I was absolutely right and what\u2019s going on currently is dynamic and fascinating,\u201d <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>he says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>Larkin hopes to inspire the youth to be creative and embrace various mediums of art beyond the traditional paint to canvas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>Some of his other work also features recycled materials.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>Larkin has an art studio based at 91 Main Road, Muizenberg, where art lovers can see this piece and everything from traditional to modern and
