{"id":44124,"date":"2024-09-11T11:34:55","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T09:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/community-support-for-mes-fuels-success-of-mi-change-voucher-system-addresses-homelessness-and-e-waste-20240911\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T04:34:05","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T02:34:05","slug":"community-support-for-mes-fuels-success-of-mi-change-voucher-system-addresses-homelessness-and-e-waste-20240911","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/community-support-for-mes-fuels-success-of-mi-change-voucher-system-addresses-homelessness-and-e-waste-20240911\/","title":{"rendered":"Community support for MES fuels success of Mi-Change voucher system, addresses homelessness and E-waste"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Mi-Change voucher system, implemented by MES Cape Town, has seen a record 96.4% redemption rate by street people, with 25 045 vouchers redeemed since August last year.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The system\u2019s success has led to a significant impact on the lives of those in need, but also poses a financial strain on MES, prompting the organization to explore new income streams, such as e-waste collection and recycling.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MES is partnering with Cape E-waste to collect electronic waste, hosting an E-Waste Day on Wednesday 11 September, and encouraging community support to address the growing e-waste crisis in South Africa and support local economic growth and job creation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the Mi-Change vouchers that were sold to the public in<br>\nthe northern suburbs in the past seven months from January to July, an average<br>\nof 96,4% were redeemed by street people at MES (Mould Empower Serve) Cape Town,<br>\na record amount since the implementation of the voucher system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past year, since August last year to July, a total<br>\nof 33<span style=\"font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u2009<\/span>161 vouchers were<br>\nsold, with a peak of 4 484 vouchers redeemed in the cold month of July alone.<br>\nThese vouchers can be redeemed by street people for a meal, clothes, a bed or a<br>\nshower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe community\u2019s engagement led to 25<span style=\"font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u2009<\/span>045 vouchers being redeemed, significantly<br>\nimpacting the lives of those in need,<span>\u201d<\/span> says Franita<br>\nKnudsen, fundraiser and marketer of MES Cape Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis marks a record high since the system\u2019s implementation,<br>\nunderscoring the effectiveness of this innovative approach to provide<br>\nassistance. We\u2019re thrilled to celebrate a significant milestone in our<br>\ncommunity\u2019s journey towards responsible giving and impactful support, thanks to<br>\nthe generosity and commitment of our community members, she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-durbanville-safe-space\">Durbanville safe space<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince the opening of the Durbanville Safe Space in New<br>\nStreet in April, the 30 bed-overnight facility was full every night and this<br>\nfurther contributes to our success,\u201d said Knudsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStreet people must sleep in a safe space to be able to take<br>\npart in our programmes. We now have a much faster turnover of street people<br>\nprogressing from the Change Readiness programme to the next step, the Work<br>\nReadiness programme, at which stage they are being moved to MES Bellville,<br>\nmaking space for new ones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although they are thrilled with the success of the Mi-Change<br>\nvoucher system, the higher demand has put a financial strain on them, she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only was there a need to appoint another social worker<br>\nat MES Durbanville recently, for whom a stock room to be converted into an<br>\noffice, but six caretakers and a manager at the safe space were also appointed,<br>\nall of whose salaries MES has had to pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cover-basic-costs\">Cover basic costs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To grow its income, MES has been partnering with Cape<br>\nE-waste to collect any electronic waste to cover some of their basic costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A special E-Waste Day is being presented next Wednesday (11<br>\nSeptember), in which people can bring any electronic waste, from broken washing<br>\nmachines and tumble dryers to microwaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>&nbsp;<\/span>\u201cWe hope to collect a<br>\nbakkie load full of electronic waste\u201d said Knudsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA new tendency is also that small-business entrepreneurs<br>\nregularly visit our depots to purchase e-waste parts to support their<br>\nbusinesses and families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the E-Waste Day next Wednesday MES Durbanville will<br>\naccept larger items such as old domestic appliances. Electronic waste includes<br>\nanything that operates with a plug or a battery, such as laptops, chargers,<br>\nphones, monitors, copiers, cables and vapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe ensure that all harmful e-waste is disposed of<br>\nresponsibly, and we receive disposal certificates from our partnering company,<br>\nunderscoring our commitment to environmental safety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/news24\/community-newspaper\/tygerburger\/mes-having-remarkable-success-with-homeless-as-e-waste-changes-their-lives-20230405\" target=\"_blank\">READ MORE:&nbsp;MES having remarkable success with homeless as E-waste changes their lives<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-threat\">Threat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn South Africa e-waste is growing five times faster than<br>\nthe recycling rate,\u201d said Knudsen. \u201cWith 2,6 million tons of e-waste generated<br>\nannually, this poses a severe threat to our environment and public health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGiven the scale of the e-waste crisis, legislative action<br>\nis urgently needed. Our initiative aims to contribute to the solution by<br>\ndemonstrating that responsible e-waste management is both achievable and<br>\nbeneficial for the environment and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCommunity support is vital for the success of our e-waste<br>\nrecycling initiative. A robust social-media campaign has significantly boosted<br>\nour efforts. We engage with small businesses, schools and churches, encouraging<br>\nthem to participate. We suggest that businesses place e-waste boxes in their<br>\noffices for employees to drop off their e-waste conveniently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCommunity involvement is essential, and we rely on it to<br>\nspread the word and encourage others to join the cause. Supporting MES, rather<br>\nthan larger e-waste companies, ensures rebates from recycled materials directly<br>\nbenefit our initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-corporate-involvement\">Corporate involvement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCommunity members can share information about our<br>\ninitiative, advocate for corporate involvement, and encourage responsible<br>\ne-waste disposal through MES,\u201d Knudsen said. \u201cTogether, we can build a<br>\nsustainable system that addresses environmental concerns while supporting local<br>\neconomic growth and job creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Mi-Change voucher system is really working, but the<br>\nincrease in street people visiting us demands us to start new enterprises to<br>\ngrow our income.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Electronic waste can also be dropped off at MES Durbanville<br>\nin Queen Street from Mondays to Saturdays from 08:00 to 16:00 and on Sundays<br>\nfrom 12:00 to 16:00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awareness for the Mi-Change voucher system will also be<br>\ncreated by Tyger Valley Shopping Centre in the build up to World Homeless Day<br>\non 10 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The voucher system, which are currently only operational in<br>\nCape Town and Johannesburg, will also be expanded to Gqeberha soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact Franita Knudsen at cptfundraising@mes.org.za or 082<span style=\"font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u2009<\/span>4407<span style=\"font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u2009<\/span>055 for more information on supporting this social<br>\nenterprise.
