Six members of the branch were recipients of these devices and food parcels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Aubrun Damons, chair of the Bonteheuwel branch, the idea started in July when DPSA and the Al-Imaad worked together on food parcels during the storm that hit the Western Cape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_184013b2\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cWe met with Al-Imaad and they said that they would like to do more than food parcels. We decided to make a list of people who\u2019s assistive devices are worn and recently handed it over,\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;says Damons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him many people with disabilities\u2019 lives are hampered by a lack of assistive devices. \u201cUnfortunately these things are expensive and people will suffer in silence, while a simple walking stick can vastly improve their lives. We hope that the recent handover will do just that. It is because of the hard work of organisations like DPSA that every public space in Bonteheuwel has been made disabled friendly. It is important that the day to day lives of the people are made as comfortable as possible. It has been great to welcome these organisations into Bontheuwel who made a needs assessment and brought the assistive devices,\u201d says McKenzie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Mckenzie it didn\u2019t end with assistive devices as the organisations also brought care packs, blankets and food parcels. \u201cThere is so much more we can do for our disabled people.
