A public meeting concerning sites proposed by the City of Cape Town in Subcouncil 2 to be used for mobile businesses such as food trucks, will take place at the Kraaifontein Subcouncil offices on Wednesday 2 October between 14:00 and 16:00. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here residents will be afforded the opportunity to engage with officials over the matter and submit their comments to the City before the deadline on 16 October. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A City spokesperson said public participation is a key step in the process of allowing permits to be issued to mobile businesses such as food trucks. Citywide, a total of 142 such sites are proposed as part of the Mobile Business Policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The policy is coupled with proposed amendments to the Informal Trading By-law to address the growing market demand for mobile business operations.These areas will allow mobile business operators to conduct their activities by legally allowing mobile business activity on specific city-owned sites. \u201cTo give effect to the policy the City must provide trading areas for mobile businesses,\u201d said the spokesperson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDuring the current public participation process, interested stakeholders can view the sites proposed on the Have Your Say page on the City\u2019s website<\/a>. This includes proposals for the number of bays available per site, the locations and the general terms and conditions when operating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dOnce this process is completed it will be tabled with the draft Mobile Business Policy and bylaw amendments at the portfolio committee, mayoral committee meeting and council for consideration and approval.According to James Vos, Mayco Member for Economic Growth in Cape Town, mobile businesses such as food trucks, barber shops and clothing shops have become increasingly popular, and the City wants to make it easier for businesses to operate in this sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to documents perused by TygerBurger the following sites were identified within Subcouncil 2:<\/div>\n

  • Next to Kraaifontein Town Hall along Brighton and Mildred Roads;<\/li>\n
  • Corner of Petersen Street and Viben Avenue;<\/li>\n
  • Corner of Viben Avenue and Carel Street;<\/li>\n
  • Corner of Darwin Street and Victoria Road;<\/li>\n
  • Corner of Petersen Street and Viben Avenue and \u2013 Silver Street Cul de Sac.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    The document further explained the mobile-business sector requires a more cohesive and structured approach than it has over the past few years. Mobile-business operators will need to obtain a mobile-business permit and ensure compliance with regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThe City is endeavouring to establish a well-managed, supportive and enabling environment for the mobile-business sector to be sustainable and have a positive relationship with the formal sector and the communities in which they operate.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Residents have until 16 October to submit comments to  Mobile.BusinessPolicy@capetown.gov.za or delivered by hand to the subcouncil 2 office.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
