Following a scam alert from
\nBellville police about a Welgelegen woman who was scammed on a WhatsApp
\ncommunity group, the TygerBurger<\/em> has since learned that these scammers
\nimpersonate legitimate businesses, in this case R17 Ventures AG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jono Duguid, R17 Ventures\u2019 Senior Business Development
\nManager, responded to the TygerBurger\u2019s <\/em>initial article<\/a> stating the
\ncompany was aware scammers had impersonated its business running scams on
\nsocial media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe too as a company are victims of this scam,\u201d said Duguid.
\n\u201cWe are also not the first company to become victims. This modus operandi has
\nbeen around for (at least what I can see via my research) around a year, with
\nthe scammers changing the company they impersonate every few months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As in the Welgelegen woman\u2019s experience, these scammers\u2019
\nmodus operandi involves adding individuals to WhatsApp groups and subgroups
\nwithout their consent where they are incentivised to leave fake reviews for
\nrestaurants and other establishments. However, those who participate often find
\nthey are not paid as promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legitimate businesses fall prey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Operating from the V&A Waterfront, R17 Ventures have
\nregistered a case at the Table Bay Harbour police on Monday 7 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leading digital-performance marketing agency provides
\nonline advertising services to international clientele. Its core services are
\nperformance marketing (paid media), running ads for clients on channels such as
\nMeta (Facebook & Instagram) Ads, Google Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Bing and content
\nproduction for organic and paid ads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe also provide digital solutions like website development,
\nSEO and data analytics,\u201d said Duguid. \u201cWe do not operate in the review space.
\nAdditionally, as a leader in our field, working with top firms across the
\nglobe, we respect privacy and uphold the regulations of POPIA, GDPR and so on,
\nparticularly around consent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the way R17 Ventures normally approaches new clients
\nis through using a mix of paid media (online advertising), cold outreach and
\nreferrals. \u201cOur client base is 95% international.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis scam, however, is positioned as a recruitment scam.
\nRegarding how we handle recruitment, we run job ads on LinkedIn, have a careers
\nsection on our website and our recruitment team also do cold outreach on
\nLinkedIn. We do not use WhatsApp groups to acquire new talent nor clients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scam alert!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

R17 Ventures continues to warn the public and their own
\nclients to be vigilant from becoming implicated by such scams, such as adding a
\nScam Alert pop-up message on their website<\/a>,
\nstating: \u201cWe are aware of a WhatsApp scam that is impersonating our company. If
\nyou have been contacted on WhatsApp, please report the admins and\/or groups
\nimmediately to WhatsApp. Do not share any personal information with these
\nimpersonators. We are currently taking necessary action. If in doubt, please
\ncontact us via our official contact channels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duguid added that their teams have been working hard to
\nrepair the reputational damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have also recommended not sharing any information with
\nthese parties. Additionally, we have contacted the scammers and told them to
\ncease and desist, in addition to opening a criminal case with Saps. We have
\nalso responded to all email queries, reviews, etc. pertaining to the WhatsApp
\ngroups informing that it is a scam impersonating our company and to take the
\nsteps outlined above.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verify, verify and verify again<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As to ways in which people seeking avenues to invest can
\nverify the legitimacy of various ventures, Duguid recommends always contacting
\nthe company in question to validate authenticity via official contact channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were first alerted to the scheme owing to people
\ncontacting us, and as a result were able to advise them to block the scammers,
\nand not engage with them. And had they engaged or \u2018done a task\u2019 we would have
\nadvised them to contact their bank immediately and advise that their account
\nmay be compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In general, he continued, most companies do not use WhatsApp
\ngroups for staff acquisition, nor client acquisition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat should be a red flag. However, as multiple businesses
\nare being impersonated and some of these businesses may use WhatsApp in such a
\nway; I would always recommend going directly to the company in question and
\nvalidating. Furthermore, one could also request their company registration
\nnumber and so on to verify they are legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
