{"id":43145,"date":"2024-11-13T10:18:45","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T08:18:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/clarity-given-on-looming-meter-update-deadline-20241112\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T05:12:38","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T03:12:38","slug":"clarity-given-on-looming-meter-update-deadline-20241112","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/clarity-given-on-looming-meter-update-deadline-20241112\/","title":{"rendered":"Clarity given on looming meter update deadline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>City of Cape Town residents with prepaid meters are exempt from the national KRN2 software update deadline, while Eskom clients need to update by 24 November.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Confusion has spread due to misinformation on social media, but City customers are assured their meters have been pre-updated.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eskom customers can check their meter status and update themselves to ensure uninterrupted power.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>With the deadline on vital electricity-meter software updates looming, social media and misinformation has caused widespread confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While pockets under the direct supply of the City of Cape Town are exempt from the deadline, Eskom-supplied clients must ensure compliance before Sunday 24 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clients in City of Cape Town supplied areas such as Mitchells Plain, Melkbosstrand and Durbanville in the <span><em>TygerBurger<\/em><\/span>\u2019s print distribution are exempt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, for areas such as Fisantekraal, Joostenberg Vlakte, Blouberg, Table View, Elsies River, Kuilsriver and pockets of Kraaifontein, Bellville and Kalksteenfontein among others, as Eskom supplied clients, residents are responsible for this upgrade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-city-clients-unaffected\">City clients unaffected<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the City, the national KRN 2 software update for prepaid clients does not apply to City customers anymore, as all meters had already been updated over the past three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDue to some highly inaccurate and confusing reporting on some news sites,\u201d said the City in a statement, \u201cmany City customers are concerned they will not be able to recharge their prepaid meters come the end of November, and won\u2019t have power supply. However, all the approximately 570 000 City prepaid meters have been done.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the City supply covers almost the entirety of the southern suburbs, and parts of the northern suburbs, some pockets are Eskom clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers are urged to check their receipts, accounts or statements to see who their main supplier is. This is the only definitive way to ascertain if the consumer is Eskom- or City-supplied. This will determine if an upgrade is required under the Eskom programme or if it has already been completed as a City customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-deadline-for-eskom-upgrade\">Deadline for Eskom upgrade<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As required by the Standard Transfer Specification Association (STSA), the deadline for the upgrades will be Sunday 24 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After this deadline, meters that have not been updated will no longer accept electricity tokens. Failure to recode by the deadline will prevent customers from loading electricity tokens, rendering their meters inoperable. Eskom confirms there will be no extension to the deadline for the Token Identifier (TID) update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to <em>People\u2019s Post\u2019s <\/em>enquiries, Eskom did not advise the impact or cost involved should a meter not be coded by the deadline, simply reiterating that it will be inoperable due to no longer accepting electricity tokens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The KRN rollout, commenced in July last year, with Eskom confirming most meters have been migrated to KRN2. \u201cCustomers experiencing any issues with vending or loading electricity units are encouraged to reach out to Eskom for support,\u201d writes Eskom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-check-your-meter\">Check your meter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"InfoBlock\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_ca643fd5\">\n<div class=\"heading\">For customers who are unsure if their prepaid meters have been recoded to KRN2, Eskom has provided the following verification code.<\/div>\n<div class=\"text\">\n<p>Simply enter 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on your meter\u2019s keypad. The<\/p>\n<p>display will show either a \u201c1\u201d or \u201c2\u201d (sometimes with additional letters).<\/p>\n<p>A \u201c1\u201d indicates that your meter remains on KRN1 and requires upgrading, while a \u201c2\u201d confirms the upgrade to KRN2.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the deadline looming, Eskom urges the remaining prepaid electricity customers to complete the recoding process as soon as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCustomers with Voltex meters will require an Eskom technician to complete the upgrade on-site using specialised equipment. These can be identified by the brand name \u2018VOLTEX\u2019 and the meter number which starts with \u201822\u2019. There are no fees associated with the KRN2 recoding,\u201d says Eskom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eskom has prepared 97% of the meters by pre-coding them, making it simple for customers to complete the process themselves. This Do-It-Yourself process requires customers to purchase credit tokens from authorised vendors, after which they will receive two sets of 20-digit codes to enter into their meters for the update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Support teams are available for assistance. Customers needing help can call 0860 037 566. For more information, updates, and assistance, customers are encouraged to visit Eskom\u2019s website, follow its social media platforms, listen to radio announcements, or participate in local
