But navigating this time of year can present unique challenges for families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UWC psychologist and head of therapeutic services, Rone Gerber, shares expert insights into how parents can help children relax, recharge and reconnect meaningfully during the holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRoutines are vital for children,\u201d says Gerber. \u201cWhen holidays arrive, it\u2019s tempting to let all the rules fly out the window, but that can disrupt their sense of security. You can relax the schedule a bit \u2013 bedtime an hour later or skipping the occasional bath \u2013 but try to maintain a rhythm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gerber says consistency in routines helps children feel grounded. \u201cLet them know it\u2019s a holiday by slightly bending the rules, but don\u2019t throw everything overboard. This helps them enjoy the break without feeling disoriented.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-importance-of-play\">Importance of play<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Children thrive on play, and Gerber highlights its therapeutic power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlay is essential \u2013 swimming, running or building sandcastles at the beach. Most children love outdoor activities and it\u2019s important to give them the freedom to play in a way that energises them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She stresses the importance of spending quality time together: \u201cMost children don\u2019t mind what you\u2019re doing, as long as you do it with them. Share a funny story, discuss current events, or sit and listen. They might push you away, but deep down they value the connection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Versatile boundaries are essential during this stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSet clear rules, but allow room for negotiation. Reward trustworthiness with greater freedom and tighten boundaries when necessary.
