In a fight against waves of counterfeit goods posing a huge
\nhealth risk to local communities, Western Cape police cracked down on an
\nillegal operation housing illicit tobacco products, estimated at more than
\nR250 000, in Bellville CBD yesterday (Wednesday 5 February). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The integrated operation kicked off in the area around
\n09:30, with efforts led by members of the Western Cape Provincial Counterfeit
\nand Illicit Goods Policing Team together with the Provincial Anti \u2013 Economic
\nCrimes Task Team and Brand Protectors from Micor Investigation Services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe members conducted a search of various shops, where 5
\n861 illicit tobacco products with an estimated street value of around R250 135
\nwere seized,\u201d according to a report released by the office of the Provincial
\nCommissioner for the Western Cape. \u201cTwo male foreign nationals aged 24 and 44
\nwere arrested and detained at the Bellville Police Station.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The duo is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates\u2019
\nCourt under the Tobacco Products Control Act of 1993, once charged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report affirmed the task force\u2019s mission: \u201c[We] remain devoted to the fight against the
\nscourge of counterfeit goods, which pose a huge health risk to communities and,
\nfurthermore, impact negatively on businesses and the economy of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
