Democratic <\/a>Alliance (DA) leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has announced a series of changes to the party’s representation in the Government of National Unity (GNU), including the demotion of Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen to deputy minister.

In a statement released on Tuesday 17 June, Hill-Lewis said he had written to President Cyril Ramaphosa outlining the proposed changes following a review of the DA’s performance in the National Executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Significant changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Among the most significant changes is the appointment of DA MP Willie Aucamp as Minister of Agriculture, replacing John Steenhuisen. Hill-Lewis praised Steenhuisen’s work during his time in the portfolio, highlighting efforts to expand international market access for South African agricultural products and improve the procurement and distribution of vaccines to combat foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aucamp will assume responsibility for one of the country’s most challenging agricultural crises. His immediate task will be to address ongoing legal proceedings related to FMD and work with industry stakeholders to bring the outbreak under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has also been tasked with continuing efforts to open new export markets and support economic growth through the agricultural sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New roles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Steenhuisen will remain in the national executive and has been appointed Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, replacing Alexandra Abrahams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hill-Lewis said Steenhuisen’s experience in expanding market access would be valuable in supporting industrial growth, improving competitiveness and promoting job creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abrahams will move to the position of Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hill-Lewis described the portfolio as one of the country’s most important for economic growth and said Abrahams would bring discipline and a reform-focused approach to the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reshuffle also includes the appointment of Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier as Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hill-Lewis said Maynier’s experience in both provincial and national government positions him well to contribute effectively at Cabinet level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advancing opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

DA MP Yusuf Cassim has been nominated as Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, while long-serving Gauteng legislator Jack Bloom will become Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hill-Lewis said the changes reflect the DA’s commitment to accountability, integrity and high standards in public office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that every DA representative in government is expected to demonstrate the party’s values through effective service delivery and responsive leadership, while advancing opportunities and economic growth for all South Africans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
