These items were confiscated at a high school in Bonteheuwel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The admission came during a blitz targeting schools in the area conducted by police, Metro police and local neighbourhood watches in a &#8220;unified operation&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to local ward councillor, Angus McKenzie, what they found on learners was nothing short of alarming. &#8220;We found cigarettes, lighters and lots of vapes, aside from the Jack Daniel&#8217;s find, and knives.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dealing-drugs\">Dealing drugs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation also uncovered a learner actively dealing in drugs. &#8220;He had drugs and a significant amount of cash on him,&#8221; McKenzie said. &#8220;Imagine a learner selling drugs in a place where he is supposed to learn. This is exactly why these operations will not stop. In fact they will become more frequent and more consistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-videopress\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"VideoPress Video Player\" aria-label='VideoPress Video Player' width='421' height='750' src='https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/Urj5hgyq?cover=1&amp;preloadContent=metadata&amp;useAverageColor=1&amp;hd=0' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen data-resize-to-parent=\"true\" allow='clipboard-write'><\/iframe><script src='https:\/\/v0.wordpress.com\/js\/next\/videopress-iframe.js?m=1770107250'><\/script>\n<\/div><figcaption>A search at schools in Bontheuwel yielded results that raised eyebrows.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If we don\u2019t intervene now, we lose our children to the same cycle we are pushing up against in our streets. As gang violence rises in our communities, it doesn\u2019t stay on the streets. It creeps into our classrooms.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the process would not stop there. &#8220;Every case involving drugs or weapons has been escalated. Social workers have been brought in, schools are being supported through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westerncape.gov.za\/service\/safe-schools-programme\">Safe Schools Programme<\/a> and interventions are underway to deal with the root causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wake-up-call\">Wake-up call<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are here not to criminalise children but to keep them safe. This should be a wake-up call for every parent, guardian and community member. What enters our schools today shapes our communities tomorrow.
