A high speed police chase by the Flying Squad ended in an arrest in Strandfontein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the case was registered at Kalk Bay police station, where some of the crimes allegedly took place, all sources on the ground confirm that the chase and arrest took place in Strandfontein on Wednesday 11 March. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Footage of the chase was circulated on social media. The video shows police cornering a car on the corners of Welgelegen and Spine roads. Sources say the car\u2019s occupants had committed several robberies in various areas before stealing tyres from a car in Muizenberg. Police reportedly gave chase before the car, seemingly trying to escape, drove over the sandy road reserve in Spine Road and was cornered while taking the turn into Welgelegen Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, according to Constable Ndakhe Gwala of the police\u2019s provincial media office, the arrest was recorded at Kalk Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robbery and pursuit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gwala said the flying squad responded to an alert of a car that was spotted in Main Road, Muizenberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe grey Honda BRV was involved in a robbery that had just occurred at Claremont and a theft that occurred earlier this month in Wynberg. They spotted the motor vehicle and a high speed chase ensued,\u201d Gwala said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Gwala, the suspects drove towards Gordon Road, Kalk Bay, in oncoming traffic, with Flying Squad members in pursuit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEventually, the suspects\u2019 vehicle left the road. Its tyres burst and the airbag deployed,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two men, both aged 58 and a 31-year-old woman were arrested. Inside the car officers found two mag wheels that had been stolen from a vehicle in Muizenberg and an elephant tusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe three suspects were arrested for theft from a motor vehicle, possession of presumable stolen property, robbery, theft general and contravention of the Nature and Environmental Conservation Ordinance Act 19 of 1974. Once charged, they will appear in the Muizenberg Magistrates’ Court.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
