The latest crime statistics for the Brackenfell area present a layered picture of public safety, with an increase in violent offences while property-related crimes have declined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The quarterly data from the final three months of last year reveals a crime landscape with both troubling increases and welcome decreases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Contact crimes or crimes against the person rose substantially to 115 cases, up 29% from 89 cases. In this category, sexual offences recorded the most significant increase, rising by eight reported cases to reach 15 incidents from the same quarter in the previous year, while murder remained stable at one case. Four cases of attempted murder were reported, three more cases than in the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Common assault jumped by five incidents to 44, and common robbery rose by six cases to 20. Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by five incidents to 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the three-month period, five cars were hijacked, three more than in the same period in the previous year. Also, four robberies at residential premises were counted, three more than in the previous year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Burglary at non-residential premises decreased by six cases to eight incidents, while burglary at residential premises fell by three cases to 34. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thirteen vehicles were stolen during the three-month period, showing no increase, while theft from motor vehicles decreased by ten cases to 60.Total property-related crime thus decreased by 18 cases (13.4%), providing some positive news amid concerning trends elsewhere.Malicious damage to property decreased significantly by 14 cases, contributing to an overall reduction to 15 incidents from 33 in the previous year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Crimes detected through police action decreased by 24 cases, mostly seen in the category of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, where only 18 arrests were made in the three-month period\u2014that includes the festive period\u2014as opposed to the 43 arrests made during the same period in the previous year.Nineteen drug-related arrests were made, and none for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Overall, the total community-reported serious crime increased by 15 cases (2.3%) from 643 to 658 incidents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Brackenfell Community Policing Forum noted the recently released crime statistics with concern. “Crime affects every member of our community, and these figures remind us that safety remains a shared responsibility,” says the chair, Norman Landry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“While law enforcement plays a vital role in combating crime, community involvement is just as important. The Brackenfell CPF encourages residents to work closely with the police by reporting suspicious activities, participating in neighbourhood safety initiatives, and supporting crime-prevention efforts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We also recognise the ongoing efforts of the South African Police Service and other stakeholders who are dedicated to improving safety in our area.
