Monthly ‘Wags and Waves’ initiative connects shelter animals with the community while offering companionship to pet lovers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Cape Town animal shelter has launched an innovative community programme that’s giving homeless dogs a chance to feel the sand between their paws while helping lonely residents experience the joy of canine companionship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Double benefit for dogs and humans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter<\/a> in Khayelitsha recently announced “Wags and Waves”, monthly beach outings where members of the public are invited to walk, play and socialise with shelter dogs in need of homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative addresses two community needs simultaneously: providing enrichment for shelter animals while offering pet interaction opportunities for people who cannot own animals due to living circumstances or those simply seeking companionship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The events are very beneficial for the dogs as it allows them time out of their shelter kennels and good stimulation,” explained Marcelle du Plessis, spokesperson at Mdzananda. “They also get more human contact which helps them feel loved.”
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next event at Milnerton Beach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The shelter’s first beach day took place at Fish Hoek Beach recently, with volunteers and dog lovers spending the morning with the animals. The next event is scheduled for Saturday 21 March at Milnerton Beach, running from 10:00 to 13:00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many Cape Town residents, the programme offers a unique solution to pet loneliness. With apartment living and rental restrictions often preventing pet ownership, Wags and Waves provides an opportunity to experience the therapeutic benefits of animal interaction without the long-term commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We would like to invite all dog lovers to join us for a fun morning out to make a difference in the lives of our shelter dogs,” said Du Plessis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three decades of community service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The initiative comes as Mdzananda celebrates three decades of serving animals in Khayelitsha. The organisation provides veterinary healthcare, sterilisations, mobile clinics and operates an animal ambulance service, helping approximately 1 500 animals monthly. The shelter has built its reputation on community inclusion, empowerment and education programmes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond offering animals a break from kennel life, the beach days serve as informal adoption events, giving potential pet owners a chance to meet and bond with animals in a relaxed, natural setting.
