CAPE TOWN \u2013<\/strong> The community disrupted police\u2019s search at a house in Lentegeur where a large cache of weapons was found last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The City released a statement saying metro police had accompanied officers from Lentegeur Police Station to a domestic dispute call out on Sunday 22 February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On arrival officers were tipped off about illegal weapons in the house.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weapons haul<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On investigation a large weapons cache was found, including grenades and rifle ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne firearm and ammunition were found to be licensed, a second belonged to a deceased relative and was never surrendered,” a police statement said. “Officers also recovered more than 230 rounds of illegal ammunition, including 87 rifle rounds, 109 9 mm rounds and 33 revolver rounds. They also found two grenade casings and several empty 9 mm casings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said the officers had called for back-up from the K9 and Bomb Squad units, but were forced to withdraw before the units arrived. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community becomes riotous<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA crowd that gathered outside became riotous,\u201d the release stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lentegeur police spokesperson Const Navon van Houten said a case of illegal possession of firearms with ammunition was opened. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the City a 48-year-old man was arrested and detained at Lentegeur Police Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the incident highlighted the challenge police had with \u201congoing public interference in enforcement operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCommunities cannot call for help and then turn on law enforcement by obstructing their work,\u201d he said. \u201cObstruction of justice is an arrestable offence. I urge communities to condemn the small minority who protect criminals and to use our tip-off number to help City enforcement remove these individuals from our streets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community outreach to seniors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, on Tuesday Lentegeur also took part in a community outreach to seniors at the Lentegeur Community Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police distributed food items to the seniors on 24 February before addressing them on issues affecting them.Van Houten said seniors were advised on elderly abuse, how to report a crime, awareness about grant dates, contact information for key personnel at the station and on how best to approach police for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
