While the family of a cycling protege from Blue Downs are elated about him being approached by an international cycling team, they are worried about the cost associated with the opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faraz Khatieb (17) has been making waves in the cycling community in recent years and while he has been shining locally and on the continent, his star is about to rise even further as he was recently approached by a team from Italy to join them for a month of trials. But before he can get there, there are some monetary obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contracts signed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to Faraz’ mother Reygana, they are at this stage not allowed the disclose the Italian team’s name. “All the contracts have been signed and we are very excited about the opportunity for him to further his career in Italy and with a professional team. In order for him to travel there we will need 1000 euros (almost R20 000 with the current exchange rate),” says Reygana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TygerBurger <\/em>has seen the contract, but at this stage the family is not at liberty to name the team he will join in Italy. If he impresses the team during his trial, he will join them for the rest of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faraz says he is committed to make the most of the opportunity. “I only have one life so it is either make this work, or die trying. It is now or never,” he says confidently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaving in February<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Faraz must leave on 27 February and his first race will be on 1 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TygerBurger <\/em>have been reporting on Faraz’ achievements in his cycling career, including representing South Africa in November last year in Continental Africa Championship in Kenya, where he placed a commendable 11th place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
