CAPE TOWN \u2013<\/strong> Cape Town’s traffic-enforcement technology proved its worth this weekend when CCTV cameras helped police arrest a suspected arsonist who was allegedly setting fire to vegetation along a major highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suspect was detained just after midnight on Saturday 17 January, after Traffic Communications Centre operators working with Freeway Management System cameras spotted someone setting vegetation alight on the M5 northbound, before Berkeley Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A coordinated effort among the Traffic Communications dispatcher, FMS operator and Highway Patrol led to the suspect’s arrest by Highway Patrol officers. The individual was detained at the Maitland Police Station, where a case of arson was subsequently opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology proves crucial in crime fighting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mayco Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith said the arrest highlighted the value of technology in combating crime when used effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We shared statistics just a few days ago about the pressure our services have absorbed to deal with the increase in vegetation and residential fires. To have individuals who deliberately set out to cause more pain and potential harm in this manner, is incredibly frustrating.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted there had been numerous fires along the M5 stretch in the past week, and expressed hope that the investigation would include a thorough assessment of all these incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weekend enforcement statistics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The arson arrest was one of 375 arrests made by the City’s enforcement agencies during the past week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traffic officers recorded 73 225 offences, impounded 143 public transport vehicles and executed 1 410 warrants of arrest. They made 63 arrests, including 50 for driving under the influence of alcohol, five for reckless and negligent driving and eight for various other offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Metro police officers made 110 arrests, issued 3 577 traffic and bylaw fines, and recovered various quantities of drugs, one pistol and 432 crayfish tails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Law Enforcement officers made 202 arrests and issued 6 877 notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Public Emergency Communication Centre received 1 211 calls for assistance over the weekend, including 429 calls for medical assistance, 46 cases of assault, 29 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents, 171 noise complaints and 23 reports of domestic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
