The City\u2019s Urban Mobility Directorate wants to inform road users that the current lane closure along Jan van Riebeeck Drive (M12) between the intersections with Francie van Zijl Drive and Jan Smuts Road in Elsies River, will remain in place over the festive season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City started with the rehabilitation of Jan van Riebeeck Drive (M12) in Elsies River in mid-November. The section earmarked for this project stretches from the intersection with Francie van Zijl Drive to Epping Avenue, and covers both the northbound and southbound carriageways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-The right-hand northbound lane of Jan van Riebeeck Drive will remain closed between the intersections with Francie van Zijl Drive and Jan Smuts Road. Traffic accommodation arrangements are in place to guide road users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-The lane closure is needed to protect the integrity of the new pavement layers that form a vital part of the rehabilitation work. The layers still need to be compacted and tested in the new year to determine whether these can safely carry traffic loads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-One northbound lane is open to traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-Both southbound lanes are open to traffic.
“The purpose of this rehabilitation project is to restore and strengthen the existing road, enhance its structural integrity and expand its longevity so that we keep Cape Town moving. Jan van Riebeeck Drive is an important arterial route and the section that is being rehabilitated links Voortrekker Road in Parow with the M16 (Francie Van Zijl Drive) in Elsies River. The roadworks include the placing of new road surfacing layers and constructing new kerbs, channels, catchpits and manholes where necessary. I want to thank road users for their patience and cooperation while we are working on Jan Van Riebeeck Drive. The contractor will return on 12 January 2026, and if all goes as planned, the project will be complete by the end of May next year,” said the City\u2019s Mayco member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
