{"id":296902,"date":"2025-11-26T16:47:35","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T14:47:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/?p=296902"},"modified":"2025-11-26T17:49:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T15:49:13","slug":"local-athlete-shines-with-gold-wins-at-durban-powerlifting-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/tygerburger\/local-athlete-shines-with-gold-wins-at-durban-powerlifting-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Local athlete shines with gold wins at Durban powerlifting competition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A local athlete from Monte Vista won gold medals at a powerlifting competition recently held in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon Augustyn, who has been powerlifting from a young age, competed in the Master Male division for contestants between 40&nbsp;and 44&nbsp;years&nbsp;old&nbsp;and for people&nbsp;in&nbsp;the 90kg weight class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He took part in two competitions &#8211; the 2025 Strict Arm Curl and Freestanding Curl World Championship as well as the WPC World Powerlifting Championships 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was my first year of competing in strength events,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Augustyn won gold and walked away as the Masters overall winner in Strict Arm Curl and Freestanding Curl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a Masters athlete he took part in&nbsp;the&nbsp;Open Class, competing against younger and older lifters, he said. Here he managed to obtain second place in the Strict Arm Curl and Freestanding Curl competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the WPC World Powerlifting Championships event, he weighed in at 86,8kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Augustyn started training weights at the age of 16.
