CAPE TOWN \u2013<\/strong> Renowned educator and former US Ambassador Dr Franklin Sonn has died aged 86.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distinguished particularly in education, diplomacy and business leadership he leaves behind a legacy spanning seven decades of public service and social transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presidential and municipal tributes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

President Cyril Ramaphosa led national tributes, expressing \u201cdeep sadness\u201d over Sonn\u2019s passing and acknowledging his \u201csignificant contributions across various sectors, including education, diplomacy, and business.\u201d He emphasised his unwavering dedication to building \u201ca just, equal and transformed South Africa\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis described Sonn as \u201can extraordinary Capetonian, distinguished educator, diplomat and business leader\u201d and \u201cone of Cape Town\u2019s great moral and civic architects\u201d. The City of Cape Town has extended official condolences, recognising his role as a key figure in building an inclusive and empowered society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Educational pioneer and anti-Apartheid leader<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sonn\u2019s remarkable journey began in Cape Town\u2019s education sector, where he served as a teacher before becoming principal of Spes Bona High School in Athlone.
