The City of Cape Town has issued an urgent warning to residents about fraudsters targeting people seeking housing opportunities during the festive season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Human Settlements Directorate reported a spike in scam reports during November and December, with fraudsters using social media platforms, SMS and WhatsApp messages to deceive residents into believing they have been approved for housing or can secure opportunities for a fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Residents and potential housing beneficiaries must be extra cautious ahead of and during the festive season as scammers often tend to approach them with bogus housing opportunities via social media and other channels,” the City said in a statement released on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City emphasised that legitimate officials will never request money or personal details through WhatsApp, SMS or social media platforms for any services, including water, electricity or housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mayco member for human settlements Carl Pophaim warned that scammers often use realistic messaging to impersonate City officials or employ fake letterheads to appear credible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Any message making claims to assist residents with an opportunity or to register them on the Housing Needs Register for a fee is fraudulent and must be reported,” Pophaim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stressed that all legitimate communication about housing opportunities comes directly from City officials through formal and verifiable channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City urged residents to verify any suspicious communication by contacting the Call Centre at 0860 103 089. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents can report suspicious activity to the fraud hotline at 0800 1100 77 or email fraud.hotline@capetown.gov.za. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
