It was an extraordinarily special day for Gladys Mostert (84) and her grandson Andy (20) \u2013 a day when dreams long cherished finally took flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a young boy, Andy, who hails from Kraaifontein, had two wishes; to become a pilot and to take his beloved Ouma<\/em> on a flight. It was a dream that Gladys, despite her lifelong fear of flying, treasured deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Andy\u2019s passion for aviation took root in early childhood. As a toddler, he would spend hours playing with toy planes. In fact, almost as soon as he began to speak, he declared his ambition to become a pilot, a dream that never wavered as he grew older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
From that day onwards, we began to work out how to make it happen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy dad, Pierre, had a passion for aviation and took me to airshows when I was growing up,\u201d Andy recalls. \u201cIt fascinated me. By the time I was 13, a friend from church took me up for a flight. While in the air, I got to take the controls for a few minutes… and I was hooked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On his 16th birthday, Pierre surprised his son with an introductory flying lesson at a local flight school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFrom that day onwards, we began to work out how to make it happen,\u201d says Andy. \u201cFlight school is very expensive, so we started brainstorming ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At 18, Andy finally got his chance. He began training and earned his private pilot\u2019s licence shortly before Christmas last year. Now, he is steadily logging flight hours and pursuing his ambition of becoming a bush pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A dream transcends generation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Throughout his journey, his grandmother remained one of his greatest supporters. As a little boy, Andy had solemnly promised her that one day, when he was \u201cgrown up\u201d, he would take her flying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt was my dream, and hers,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe drew me countless pictures of aeroplanes, which I faithfully stuck to my fridge,\u201d recalls Gladys with a smile. \u201cHe always told me, \u2018One day, Ouma<\/em>, we\u2019re going to fly\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nGetting ready for take-off in the Sling 2.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
That long-promised day arrived just after Gladys\u2019s 84th birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pierre drove her to the airstrip under the pretense of visiting Andy, who had taken his sister up for a flight. \u201cWhen we got there, Andy walked up to her and said, \u2018Come Ouma, <\/em>today is the day\u2019!\u201d says dad Pierre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe was a bit nervous,\u201d Andy admits. \u201cRight from the start, she told me not to do anything crazy. I promised her I\u2019d take it easy. The winds were strong that day \u2013 around 60 to 70 km\/h \u2013 and we certainly felt them as we climbed, but ouma<\/em> was incredibly brave. She didn\u2019t scream once; she simply closed her eyes and stayed calm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe hardest part,\u201d laughs Gladys, \u201cwas clambering very ungracefully into the plane. I was nervous at first, but once I was settled in and Andy began talking me through everything, I started to relax. As we took off, he explained each step. It grew quiet, we gathered speed, and then came Andy\u2019s words: \u2018Ouma<\/em>, we\u2019re up in the air\u2019!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A day to remember<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Andy turned the nose of the Sling 2, powered by its Rotax 912 engine, towards the West Coast. For the next hour and a half, they soared along the coastline to Saldanha and back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know who was happier \u2013 Ouma<\/em> or me,\u201d says Andy. \u201cHaving her in that plane with me was magical. It felt incredible to fulfil the promise I made as a child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The first thing I wanted to see was Robben Island, and as we flew over the ocean, I reminded Andy a few times that I couldn\u2019t swim,\u201d she chuckles. \u201cSeeing the coastline from such a low altitude was unforgettable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Gladys, it was the birthday surprise of a lifetime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Scared and all, it was a surprise of a lifetime,” she says. \u201cBut all said and done, I reveled in it. It was hard to believe I\u2019d actually done it, and so did my friends, until they saw the photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAn hour and a half flew by like minutes,\u201d says Gladys. \u201cI am so very proud of him. He\u2019s a brilliant pilot \u2013 and yes, I would absolutely do it again, in an instant.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
