The Bothasig Community Policing Forum (CPF) has warned recently that learners in the area are being “targeted” for their mobile devices, especially during the early morning drop-off. The CPF issued a warning on Thursday 11 September, encouraging learners to stay alert and safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mario Borchards, CPF chair, stated that he wants to bring the safety concern to the attention of the community, after being approached for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Learners within the Bothasig precinct are increasingly being targeted for their devices – such as cellphones and laptops – particularly during early-morning school drop-offs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“In the last couple of months, there have been incidents where learners were robbed in front of schools during these early-morning hours. This is a deeply concerning trend that places our young people at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We appeal to parents, guardians, and learners to remain vigilant during drop-off times. Staying alert and taking precautionary measures can help reduce the risk of becoming a target,” Borchards says.

The CPF shared a few safety tips with the learners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
. Keep your cellphone and laptop out of sight when walking to school;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
. Do not use earphones while walking – stay aware of your surroundings;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
. Walk in groups where possible, and not alone;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
. Report any suspicious persons or vehicles immediately and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
. Never accept lifts or offers from strangers.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Safety tips for their parents were also shared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
. Drop learners as close to the school gate as possible;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
. Avoid giving learners expensive devices if not needed at school;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
. Encourage children to call or text once safely inside the school and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
