“She spoke about the devastating effect drugs had on her family and admitted that at one stage she nearly took her own life. Her courage and honesty touched everyone in the audience and reminded us why these events matter. Another highlight was seeing families attend together \u2013 it shows that change and awareness truly begin at home,” Povie added.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Awareness vital<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Povie explained that awareness campaigns like this are vital for Ruyterwacht, Elsies River and surrounding communities, where substance abuse remains a pressing challenge.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Drugs continue to fuel crime, unemployment, school dropouts, family breakdowns and mental health issues in our community. Campaigns like this provide education, resources and hope. They help break the silence, reduce stigma, and show people that they are not alone in these struggles,” she said.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The key message from the day was that recovery and prevention are possible when communities unite.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We wanted residents to feel empowered, informed and motivated to take small but meaningful steps \u2013 whether it’s supporting someone who is struggling, guiding young people, or making healthier choices themselves. Importantly, we also reminded everyone of the resources available in the community,” Povie noted.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By creating space for dialogue and offering access to information, the event not only raised awareness but also built resilience and hope.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
