So Sanral wants to spend R3 billion (“Mayor N1 upgrades on the cards”, TygerBurger 25 September), on a scheme to move the choke point on the N1 up a few kilometers.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to alleviate the existing traffic density – think outside the box – install a Docklands Light Railway type of system (as in London) with independent rail carriages running every minute from Bellville (or close) to Cape Town, and a return in the afternoon. Even from Paarl?

Park and ride – secure parking, cheap rail tickets, it’s not about only revenue, think of the ecological savings.
