Plastic Free July is celebrated globally and according to Zoe Prinsloo, founder of the non-profit organisation Save a Fishie, the campaign helps to provide ideas to help millions of people around the world reduce single-use plastic waste at home, work, school and even at their local take-away.

“This movement has inspired 100+ million participants in 190 countries over the last few years. By making a small change in our daily lives we will collectively make a massive difference to our communities. We can choose to refuse single-use plastics in July but I truly believe that by being part of Plastic Free July it will help you to find great alternatives that can become forever new habits,” Prinsloo says.

Here are a few of her top tips and ones we can all easily do:

  • Buy your own reusable shopping bags.
  • Buy reusable water bottles or travel mugs.
  • Choose loose produce instead of plastic wrapped punnets.
  • Pick up litter, for example at a beach clean-up.
  • Avoid plastic wrap.
  • Take your own containers when buying take-aways.
  • Choose reusable decorations and ditch the balloon.
  • Use cloth nappies where possible, and
  • Switch to reusable menstrual products.
