Juan-Louw Greyling left the city at about 17:45

Missing Brackenfell man found in police custody on drug charges

The 34-year-old Brackenfell man, Juan-Louw Greyling, who was reported missing after failing to return home from an e-hailing journey from his workplace in Cape Town CBD on 14 April, has been found in Parow police custody on the night of his disappearance, according to the Western Cape police media office.

“Kindly be advised that the person who was reported missing was in police custody at Parow SAPS. He made his first court appearance at the Bellville Magistrate’s Court today,” police spokesperson Const. Ndakhe Gwala confirmed yesterday. Gwala informed TygerBurger telephonically that he was charged with possession of drugs, specifically Tik.

The arrest took place on the corner of Voortrekker and Ryan Street on Tuesday, 14 April, at approximately 19:30.

However, police spokesperson Gwala, later stated that the case was withdrawn, adding that she could not confirm the reason for the withdrawal and advised that further enquiries be directed to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) told TygerBurger that the case of alleged drug possession was nolle prosequi — meaning a decision by a prosecutor to drop or discontinue a criminal charge.

‘More to the story’

Greyling departed the city at approximately 17:45 when his girlfriend, Chantel Rossouw, arranged a trip for him through the InDrive platform. As his phone was in for repairs, Rossouw ordered the trip on his behalf. When Rossouw returned home at 21:30, she discovered that Greyling had not arrived. According to the missing persons report filed on Pink Ladies, the trip was cancelled after eleven minutes.

At this stage, no additional information is available, but TygerBurger is awaiting further information from the investigation officer.

A media inquiry was sent to the InDrive support desk, and receipt was acknowledged, albeit almost 24 hours later. “We are very concerned about the situation you mentioned. Can you please share more information about what happened … so our specialist can assist you,” read the email message from InDrive. Details have been supplied to the company, and the newspaper is currently awaiting their response.

Rossouw confirmed the arrest but not the charge or the possession of Tik, telling TygerBurger in a text message that “there is more to the story.” She also denied that Greyling had appeared in court. Upon further enquiry, TygerBurger has yet to receive a response.

This story has been updated to reflect the NPA’s statement that the charges have not been withdrawn, but were entered as nolle prosequi (a formal entry by the prosecution indicating that it will not proceed with the case at this stage)
