{"id":50544,"date":"2022-04-05T06:00:36","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T04:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/swartlandgazette\/pilchard-pasta-bake-20220404-3\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T22:40:56","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T20:40:56","slug":"pilchard-pasta-bake-20220404-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/swartlandgazette\/pilchard-pasta-bake-20220404-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Pilchard pasta bake"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A pantry staple, tinned pilchards, reinvented in a hearty cheese-topped pasta bake!<b><\/b><b>\n<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>\n <b>Ingredients<\/b>\n<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<b>\n<p>500 g penne pasta<\/p>\n<p>1 large onion<\/p>\n<p>2 garlic cloves \u2013 crushed<\/p>\n<p>1 tsp curry powder<\/p>\n<p>1 tsp dried mixed herbs<\/p>\n<p>1 can tinned tomatoes<\/p>\n<p>400 g pilchards in tomato sauce<\/p>\n<p>1 tsp tomato paste<\/p>\n<p>\u00bc cup frozen peas<\/p>\n<p>1 tablespoon canola oil<\/p>\n<p>\u00bd cup Parmesan cheese \u2013 grated<\/p>\n<p>\u00bd cup cheddar cheese \u2013 grated<\/p>\n<p>salt and black pepper<b>Method:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 180\u00baC.<\/p>\n<p>Cook the pasta according to package directions until <i>al dente,<\/i> then set aside.<\/p>\n<p>Heat canola oil in a pan, fry onions, garlic, mixed herbs, curry powder until translucent, add tinned tomatoes, peas, tomato paste and mix well.<\/p>\n<p>Add deboned pilchards along with the tomato sauce, and cook on medium heat for five minutes. Season with salt and black pepper.<\/p>\n<p>Mix the pilchard mixture with cooked pasta, ensure that you mix it well.<\/p>\n<p>Transfer into a baking tray.<\/p>\n<p>Sprinkle the cheese duo on top, and
