In 1956, 20 000 South African women took to the streets in peaceful protest against an oppressive government. The women, from all walks of life, united to make their voices heard in the name of justice. At a time when women\u2019s rights across the world were still in its infancy, South African women took the lead and set the pace, showing the world just how powerful a united action can be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although these extraordinary acts of heroism form part of our history, women in South Africa are some of the most vulnerable groups in our country. Gender-based violence is a plague impacting all women. Speaking to colleagues, family members and friends, it seems almost everyone knows a woman who, at one time or another, was a victim of gender-based violence. Violence against women has become the norm in our society, not the exception. This truly is a tragedy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As we celebrate the women of South Africa today, and during the month of August, I want to encourage every person not to tolerate violence and abuse against women. Do not look away, do not pretend you cannot hear. Let us act, let us protect and defend those who are the most vulnerable in our communities. Let\u2019s teach all our children, girls and boys, the true meaning of mutual respect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let\u2019s teach our next generation that true strength and respect does not discriminate against gender, race, or socio-economic status. Let\u2019s celebrate and commemorate the great South African Women of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
