Seven men were arrested late last night and early this morning in connection with the brutal murder of seven people in Better Life, Philippi East. The victims were shot and killed before their bodies were set alight on Friday, 18 October.
The suspects, aged between 16 and 22, are facing multiple charges of murder and will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel André Traut said the arrests resulted from close cooperation between detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit and Crime Intelligence officers.
“The suspects were traced and apprehended during a series of well-coordinated operations that followed days of intensive investigation and intelligence-driven efforts,” Traut said. He described the arrests as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat violent and organised crime across the province.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile praised the swift and professional actions of both the detectives and crime intelligence units, describing the arrests as sending a clear message to perpetrators of violence.
“We will not tolerate ruthless acts of violence that destroy lives and destabilise our communities,” Patekile said. “The men and women of the South African Police Service, supported by our intelligence capability, will continue to hunt down those who commit such barbaric crimes. There will be no hiding place for criminals in this province.”
A community leader from Better Life, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of harassment, welcomed news of the arrests.
“Yhooo, so quick!” he exclaimed. “It’s news to me. I didn’t know that people were arrested in connection with that mass shooting. Well done to our officers. As a community, we need to give credit where it’s due. The officers did a great job. I’m so happy. I think the whole nation is applauding what the officers did.”
The community leader said the area had been tense since the incident and urged residents to speak out against any wrongdoing in their communities.
The investigation into the mass killing continues as authorities work to establish the motive behind the attack that shocked the local community.
