CAPE TOWN – The South African Navy will once again open its doors to the public with the return of the SA Navy Festival 2026, set to take place from Friday 17 April to Sunday 19 April at the East Dockyard in Simon’s Town.
This much-anticipated annual event promises an engaging and educational experience, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the Navy.
Navy opens doors
Positioned as a highlight on South Africa’s maritime calendar, the festival is designed to showcase the Navy’s fleet, personnel and heritage while strengthening public understanding of its role.
Organisers describe the event as more than just a festival, but a demonstration of a modern, transparent force that is both accessible and accountable to the public it serves.
South Africa’s economy and security are closely tied to its maritime environment, yet awareness of the ocean economy and maritime protection remains limited.
The festival aims to bridge this gap by giving the public first-hand insight into naval operations, capabilities and career opportunities.
This year’s programme has been expanded to appeal to a wide audience, including families, maritime enthusiasts and young people considering a future in the Navy.
Explore fleet tours
Among the highlights are guided fleet tours, where visitors can board selected naval vessels and even explore a Type-209 submarine under the guidance of trained personnel.
Military precision displays are expected to draw crowds, with performances by drill teams, Officers’ Sword Drill units and Sea Cadets showcasing discipline and skill.
Another standout attraction is the night shoot firing display, offering a dramatic spectacle under the evening sky.
Family festival fun
Entertainment will also play a key role, with live performances by the renowned SA Navy Band adding to the festive atmosphere.
Visitors can further enjoy capability exhibitions, including search and rescue demonstrations and firefighting displays, which highlight the Navy’s specialised skills and readiness.
For families, the event will include food stalls, arts and crafts, and dedicated children’s entertainment areas, ensuring a lively and inclusive environment for all ages.
The festival will run daily from 10:00 to 17:00, and entry is free. Organisers encourage the public to take full advantage of this opportunity to learn more about the Navy’s contribution to national security and prosperity.
However, residents and visitors should be aware of temporary road closures in Simon’s Town.
Road closures
These will affect Main Road between Admiralty House and the Martello Sports Field on 17 April for a rehearsal and again on 18 April for the Right of Entry Parade.
Closures will be in effect between 08:30 and 11:00.
Traffic will be diverted via Soldiers Road, Arsenal Road and Runciman Drive, with the same routes used for outbound travel.
Due to the expected high number of visitors, the Navy is urging the public to use public transport where possible.
Additional train services will be provided, and park-and-ride facilities will operate from Fish Hoek to ease congestion.
The SA Navy Festival ultimately serves as an open invitation for the public to connect with the country’s naval forces —offering a unique opportunity to see, learn and engage.
