Die emosies het hoog geloop in Oom Thomas se sterftekamer. Vir \u2019n paar minute het die “ongelowiges” na die profeet en sy dissipel gestaar. Mariaantjie het Christiaan se hand vasgehou en geweier om na haar pa op die bed te kyk. Tant Esther, nooit \u2019n vrou met \u2019n gebrek aan woorde nie, was die eerste een wat die stilte kon breek.<\/p>\n

\u201cDis te laat, my kind. Pappa is weg. Maar jy kan hier langs hom kom staan. Hou sy hand vas. Dit is nog warm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Christiaan het Mariaantjie weggetrek van haar pa se bed.<\/p>\n

Tant Esther het haar vererg.<\/p>\n

\u201cKrisjan, wat kom soek jy nou hier? Jy kan hom nou nie meer emosioneel gevange hou nie! Hy is weg! Kyk na hom! Die arme man wat jy in sy laaste dae mislei het! Gelukkig het sy o\u00eb oopgegaan voor die einde. Jy kan nou maar jou lappe vat en loop. Los my kind se hand!\u201d<\/p>\n

Christiaan se woorde het almal tot stilte geskok. Dit<\/em> het hulle nie verwag nie …<\/p>\n

\u201cEk kom hom uit die dode opwek.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chrissie vertel sy moes Tant Esther laaf. Die hartseer van die verlies en die woede oor Christiaan, was te veel vir haar. Toe sy asem skep, het sy woorde sissend in Christiaan se rigting gespu.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs jy nou heeltemal gek? Los my man dat hy in vrede rus!\u201d<\/p>\n

Christiaan kon op sy dissipel se steun staatmaak.<\/p>\n

\u201cMamma, los hom uit! Christiaan se meester gaan Pappa weer laat wakker word. Julle ongelowiges sal sien!\u201d<\/p>\n

Geen skok of hartseer kon Tant Esther se vurige gees onderdruk nie.<\/p>\n

\u201cKyk, jy kan maar sit en bid tot jy eelte op jou sterre kry. My man is nou by sy Vader in die hemel en dit is waar hy gaan bly!\u201d<\/p>\n

Toe kyk sy vir Dominee Jordaan en sy trawante.<\/p>\n

\u201cJulle beter die man hier uitvat anders is daar vandag \u2019n sterfte en \u2019n moord op hierdie plaas!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mariaantjie het reg voor haar ma gaan staan. Uitdagend. Daar was \u2019n vreemde glans in haar o\u00eb, het Chrissie vertel. \u2019n Glans wat mens onrustig laat voel. Soos iemand wat met \u2019n bose gees besete is.<\/p>\n

\u201cDis alles Mamma se skuld! Mamma is \u2019n ongelowige en \u2019n moordenaar! Christiaan s\u00ea Mamma en die dokter het ons baba uit my maag gehaal en hom doodgemaak! Julle is moordenaars! Julle het nou my Pappa ook vermoor!\u201d<\/p>\n

Tant Esther het haar dogter probeer paai. Sy kon haar altyd na \u2019n ruk tot bedaring bring, maar daardie dag was dit nie so maklik nie.<\/p>\n

\u201cChrissie, kry Mariaantjie se pille, netnou kry sy weer \u2019n aanval. Kom Mariaantjie, Mamma gaan jou wys hoe lyk jou rok. Het jy gesien? Dis klaar!\u201d<\/p>\n

Tant Esther het die towerwoorde gespreek: Mariaantjie se rok.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegtig Mamma? Kan ek dit kom aanpas?\u201d<\/p>\n

Maar Christiaan wou nie toelaat dat Tant Esther sy dissipel weglok nie.<\/p>\n

\u201cUitverkore vrou! Kom hier! Jy sal hier langs jou pa se bed sit en saam met my bid!\u201d<\/p>\n

Maar Mariaantjie se brein het vasgehaak by die rok.<\/p>\n

\u201cEk kom nou Christiaan. Hoor jy? My rok is klaar!\u00a0 Ek gaan hom aantrek vir as Pappa wakker word. Ek dink hy sal so bly wees om my in my trourok te sien as hy wakker word! Bid jy solank. Ek kom netnou. Chrissie, kom jy saam, dan kan jy tee maak vir as Pappa wakker word. Hy sal dors wees!\u201d<\/p>\n

Christiaan het sy hande dramaties die lug in gesteek. Nes soos Dominee Jordaan maak as hy die laaste se\u00ebn uitspreek. Die dominee, dokter en prokureur het verstom na die spektakel staan en staar.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeester, help my om hierdie ongelowiges vandag te wys dat u in beheer is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chrissie s\u00ea sy kon sweer Christiaan het werklik geglo Oom Thomas gaan sy o\u00eb oopmaak. Hy het net so \u2019n vreemde glans in sy o\u00eb gehad.<\/p>\n

\u201cHy het \u2019n onverwagse troefkaart getrek en ons was almal onkant betrap. Ek was verbaas dat die geleerde manne in die kamer so geskok-stil na Christiaan kon staan en kyk. Hulle was letterlikk stomgeslaan! En nou moet ek beken, wat op die plaas gebeur het, was so vreemd, dat min mense dit sou glo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ek en Chrissie het lank oor die hofsaak gesels. Verskeie kenners het getuig van Christiaan se geestessiekte.<\/p>\n

\u201cHulle was reg. Christiaan was \u2019n siek man. Die kern van sy wese was siek. Ek en Tant Esther het dit heeltyd vermoed, tog was ons by tye hulpeloos onder sy manipulerende spel. Baie mense vra hoe kon ons so lank stilbly? Ons was tog nie fisieke gevangenis nie, maar ek s\u00ea weer, as jy nie daardie tyd op die plaas was nie, sal jy nie verstaan nie. Christiaan het twee magtige wapens teen ons gehad. Oom Thomas en Mariaantjie. As jy twee kwesbare mense werklik liefhet, sal jy hulle beskerm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Die gebeure op die plaas was inderdaad buitengewoon en van die kantlyn af is dit moeilik om Christiaan te oordeel. Was hy bloot stapelgek, of was hy boos?<\/p>\n

“Watter soort\u00a0 mens kan vir so lank so \u2019n gekheid aanvang? Hy het dae om in Oom\u00a0 Thomas se kamer sit en bid. En hy het dag in en dag uit daardie wit kleed gedra. Dit saans uitgewas. En kaalvoet! Of hy was gek of hy het regtig in sy saak geglo. Hy het net daardie ongesuurde broodjies van hom ge\u00ebet. Hy het met \u2019n sak koring hier aangekom en self die koring met \u2019n klip gemaal. Tensy hy skelm ge\u00ebet het, het ek hom nooit iets anders sien eet nie. Dit moes deursettingsvermo\u00eb geverg het. Hy moes al die heerlike geure uit die kombuis ruik. Maar hy het net sy meelbroodjies ge\u00ebet. Fanaties, s\u00ea ek jou!\u201d<\/p>\n

Met die lees van die testament het hulle die testament gekry wat Christiaan en die een of ander helper Oom Thomas help opstel het. Daarvolgens sou Mariaantjie als erf. Volgens die ou testament sou Tant Esther alles erf en na haar dood sou die geld in \u2019n trust geplaas word wat Mariaantjie tot haar dood sou versorg.<\/p>\n

Die twee testamente het \u2019n dilemma veroorsaak.<\/p>\n
