Oom Thomas was gelukkig. Hy het daarna in en uit \u2019n koma gegaan en Tant Esther het weer in die enkelbed in sy kamer geslaap. Haar teenwoordigheid het Christiaan effe laat retireer langs die sterfbed. Tant Esther was weer in beheer van haar man se lyding. Christiaan het nog vir so \u2019n dag in die sterfkamer sy gebede geprewel. Toe bly hy daar uit.<\/p>\n

Maar Tant Esther en Chrissie het geweet Christiaan het nog nie opgegee nie. As hy opgegee het, sou hy van die plaas af padgegee het.<\/p>\n

\u201cHy moes geweet het die einde van sy spel was in sig, maar hy het bly klou. Dit was vreemd. Asof hy op \u2019n missie was en nie omgegee het of ons hom ontmasker nie. Ek het regtig begin dink die man glo sy eie leuen. Daar was duidelik iets verkeerd met hom. Ek dink hy het werklik geglo hy is \u2019n profeet! Dit was \u2019n verligting dat hy uit ons pad was in die siekekamer, maar ons was heeltyd bewus van sy teenwoordigheid. Dit het soos \u2019n onheilspellende wolk oor die plaas gehang. Ons het geweet hy is steeds besig om planne te maak. Terwyl ons aandag aan die sterwende Oom Thomas gegee het, het hy al sy aandag op Mariaantjie gevestig. Ons het dit geweet, maar daar was net nie tyd om dit ook nog te probeer beheer nie. Ons sou later skadebeheer moes toepas, het ons geweet. Eendag, as die drama met Christiaan verby is, sal ons harde werk moes insit om Mariaantjie se kop weer reg te kry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mariaantjie het ook weggebly uit haar pa se kamer. Sy en Christiaan het op die plaas rondgedwaal en elke dag by die kruise gaan sit. Mariaantjie het elke dag haar wit nagrok gedra. Soms het Christiaan vir haar \u2019n blomkrans gevleg en soos \u2019n kroon op haar kop gesit. Soms het sy haar veil<\/em> saam die uitrusting gedra en met \u2019n bos tuinblomme deur die tuin gestap waar haar beloofde man sit en bid het. Sy het geblom onder sy liefde en aandag, maar op \u2019n afstand het Chrissie en Tant Esther met kommer na die situasie gekyk.<\/p>\n

Tant Esther het besef dit is tyd dat Mariaantjie haar pa moet groet.<\/p>\n

\u201cMamma vra mooi, kom saam my na Pappa se kamer. Jy moet hom kom groet. Pappa gaan na Liewe Jesus toe. Hy is baie siek.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maar Mariaantjie het vasgesteek. Sy was al haar lewe verknog aan haar Pappa, maar onder Christiaan se invloed was sy halsstarrig.<\/p>\n

\u201cEk wil nie! Dis Mamma se skuld dat Pappa doodgaan! Christiaan s\u00ea Mamma is die ongelowige wat die oorsaak is dat Pappa so ly! Hoekom luister Mamma nie? Asseblief, Mamma! Christiaan s\u00ea sy meester gaan Mamma swaar straf!\u201d<\/p>\n

Tant Esther het geweet dat niks Mariaantjie se kop kan draai as sy eers \u2019n besluit geneem het nie, maar sy het probeer, ter wille van Oom Thomas.<\/p>\n

\u201cPappa wil jou graag sien. Dominee Jordaan kom ook netnou, dan gaan ons almal saam met Pappa bid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Die noem van die dominee se naam het Mariaantjie meer histeries gemaak.<\/p>\n

\u201cHy is \u2019n ongelowige! Julle kan nie dat \u2019n ongelowige vir my Pappa kom bid nie! Asseblief Mamma! As jy en Chrissie net na Christiaan wil luister. Hy sal saam met Mamma by die kruis vir Mamma se vergifnis gaan bid. Dan sal my Pappa bly leef. Mamma sal sien!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mariaantjie en Christiaan is daar weg om by die kruise vir die sterwende te gaan bid.<\/p>\n

Daardie middag het almal wat Christiaan as ongelowiges gebrandmerk het op \u2019n ry op die plaas aangekom. Die dominee, die dokter, die prokureur.<\/p>\n

\u201cEk en Tant Esther het \u2019n vreemde rustigheid aangevoel. Ons het geweet Oom Thomas is finaal besig om te sterwe en dit was vir ons \u2019n hartseer verligting. Ons was bekommerd oor Mariaantjie wat nie haar pa wil gaan groet nie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oom Thomas se profeet het hom in sy sterwensuur in die steek gelaat. Hy moes besef het dat hy nie meer die sterwende man kon manipuleer nie. Mariaantjie \u00a0was sy enigste oorblywende dissipel.<\/p>\n

Chrissie vertel dat dit eintlik komies was hoe dramaties Christiaan soms op die grasperk voor die siekekamer gekniel en gebid het.<\/p>\n

\u201cHy het gesorg dat ons hom kan sien. Ek dink hy was eintlik verslaaf aan die aandag. Die grasperk was die nuwe verhoog waarop hy sy dramatiese spel uitgebeeld het. In sy wit kleed met \u2019n wit lap voor hom uitgesprei. Op die lappie met sy ewige broodjies wat hy breek. \u2019n Vreemde nagmaal. Dit was kriewelrig. Ja, daardie man het my \u2019n vreemde onheil laat aanvoel. Dit was ook merkwaardig dat hy nie opgegee het nie. Hy het sy bisarre spel voortgesit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chrissie was gebroke oor oom Thomas se einde. Hy was die enigste pa wat sy geken het. Tant Esther was dankbaar dat sy haar man in liefde kon groet. Die tye wat hy by was, het hy nie meer na sy profeet gevra nie. Hy het na Mariaantjie geroep en aan sy Esther se hand vasgeklou. Tant Esther, wat deur seisoene van geil re\u00ebnval en droogtes by hom gestaan het, het hom verseker van haar liefde en dat sy Mariaantjie sal oppas. Hulle liefde is ook gesmee deur die aanvaarding dat die genetiese afwyking wat Mariaantjie getref het, beteken het dat hulle nooit ander kinders sou kon h\u00ea nie. Tant Esther het \u2019n dankbare vrede bereik Sy was verlig dat sy ten minste di\u00e9 deel van die geveg teen die blessitse profeet\u00a0 gewen het.<\/p>\n

Die dominee, prokureur en dokter het nuuskierig deur die kamervenster na die vreemde vertoning op die gras gestaar. Die biddende profeet en Mariaantjie wat in haar nagrok langs hom kniel.<\/p>\n

Daar was \u2019n vreedsame stilte in die siekekamer toe oom Thomas sy laaste asem uitgeblaas het. Dit is onderbreek toe Mariaantjie en Christiaan by die deur instap.<\/p>\n
