Hier, in die middel van Nairobi, Kenia, waar die onrustige stad lyk of hy enige oomblik uit sy nate gaan bars, lyk dit vir my na \u2019n onmoontlike taak.<\/p>\n<p>Dit, en die hartseer-swaarkry op die jong vroue se gesigte, is dalk wat Susan Wood gesien het toe sy in 1975 besluit het om iets daaraan te doen. Susan het teen die stroom geswem en alles moontlik gedoen om vroue, veral <strong>enkelma&#8217;s<\/strong>, te help om hulself te help. Vandag, byna 40 jaar later, staan ek op dieselfde plek waar Susan destyds met haar groot taak begin het en kyk hoe die rye vroue voor my sorgvuldig elke stukkie klei met die hand vorm en verf. Al is sy reeds oorlede, leef haar droom om te help voort en, in \u2019n tyd van massaproduksie, word Kazuri (dit beteken klein en pragtig in Swahili) se gesogte juwele regoor die w\u00eareld uitgevoer. Belangriker nog: dit gee elk van die 300 vroue wie daar werk en hul kinders \u2019n kans.<\/p>\n<p>Susan wou help, en sy het.<\/p>\n<p>\u2019n Entjie straat-af maak \u2019n jong man sy motor se kattebak oop en laai streepsakke vol ou, vuil plakkies af. Vir elke kilo wat hy aanry, kry hy \u2019n geldjie. Die plakkies, versamel van strande aan die ooskus van Afrika, is deel van die marienekundige-sakevrou Julie Church se manier om die lewensgevaarlike plastiek uit die see te hou. Julie het besluit om \u2019n plan te maak en jaarliks, by Ocean Sole in Nairobi, word daar tot 50 ton ou, vuil plakkies verwerk tot dekoratiewe renosters, olifante, leeus, bokke, skilpaaie en selfs \u2019n deurstop of ses.<\/p>\n<p>Ek staan <strong>verwonderd<\/strong> en kyk hoe die jong vroue en mans die plakkies skrop, skuur, droog, plak en kerf. En dan met soveel trots in die klein winkel uitstal.<\/p>\n<p>Julie wou help, en sy het.<\/p>\n<p>Ek sien nog tientalle soortgelyke projekte. Staan verwonderd oor die harte en hande wat ander <strong>help<\/strong>. Wonder hoeveel soortgelyke stories ek op ons eie voorstoep sal kry.<\/p>\n<p>Dan ry ons laatmiddag verby die eens blink winkelsentrum wat verlede jaar in \u2019n grutoneel verander is toe \u2019n groep terroriste voor die voet op \u2019n besige koopdag daarbinne losgebrand het. En, vertel die inwoners, steeds word tientalle vermis en is hul lyke waarskynlik iewers in die rommel begrawe. Ek vat die hand van \u2019n vrou wie se swanger suster daardie dag gesterf het.
