Sy hou van orde, beheersing, die lewe in duidelik-gemerkte boksies op die rak.<br \/>\nDis nege-uur, Vrydagaand, Johannesburg. Ons klim uiteindelik op die oorvol vliegtuig, reeds \u2018n uur laat. Langs my skuif \u2018n jong man brom-brom in. Sy dagoud-klere gekreukel, o\u00eb moeg. Mis in Kaapstad het di\u00e9 oggend gekeer dat sy vlug uit Londen in die Moederstad land. Hy sit al die hele dag op O.R. Tambo, sy geduld is min, sy irritasievlakke hoog. Hy vroetel met sy boek, skuif heen-en-weer in die klein, krimpende middelste sitplek. Sy vingers lughawe-taai, sien ek.<br \/>\n\u2018n Ent weg Kaap toe kom die nuus. Die mis is terug. \u201cMens weet nooit hoe jou geluk draai nie,\u201d s\u00ea Kaptein Opgewek. \u201cOns kyk wat ons kan doen.\u201d Die vliegtuig daal. Daar\u2019s \u2018n wit kombers oor die Kaap; dit blink in die nag.<br \/>\nDan, sonder waarskuwing, pluk Kaptein Opgewek die vliegtuig se neus hemel toe. \u2018n Paar minute later kom die stem: \u201cDie mis is te dik. Jammer, maar ek kan nie \u2018n kans waag nie.\u201d<br \/>\nDis elf-uur, Vrydagaand, iewers in die lug op pad Noorde toe. My buurman staan woordeloos op, skuur ongeduldig paadjie-af.<br \/>\n\u2018n Paar minute later sien ek die taai vingers eerste raak. Dis twee klein botteltjies wit wyn. \u201cVir jou.\u201d Hy\u2019t nog twee in sy ander hand. Syne. \u201cNou\u2019s die tyd om beheer te verloor,\u201d s\u00ea hy en gooi die wyn soos koeldrank in sy keelgat af.<br \/>\nEk giggel, onbeheersd. Sal ek, of sal ek nie? Die Maagd in my rol haar o\u00eb. \u2018n Sluk wyn, sonder glas, net so uit die bottel? Te wild vir haar. Ek draai die wynbottel oop, ignoreer haar stem, die fladderende o\u00eb en sluk. Een salige sluk. Draai net so vinnig die bottel weer toe, prop dit saam met die ander een in my sak, maak my o\u00eb toe en hoor vir Elvis sing:<\/p>\n<div>\n<em>A well I bless my soul<br \/>\nWhat&#8217;s wrong with me?<br \/>\nI&#8217;m itching like a man on a fuzzy tree<br \/>\nMy friends say I&#8217;m actin wild as a bug<br \/>\nI&#8217;m in love<br \/>\nI&#8217;m all shook up<br \/>\nMm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah!<\/em><\/div>\n<p>Vanaand is ek lief vir die lewe. Veral die onvoorspelbare. Die Maagd in my trek haar rok reg, stryk die nag se kreukels plat. Selfs sy het vir \u2018n wyle oorgegee.<br \/>\nSkuins na een Saterdagoggend is ons terug in Johannesburg. My buurman so dronk soos \u2018n spook. Die res van my wyn ook in sy keel af. Hy loer skuinsweg na my en slingergroet. \u201cVerloor beheer. Net soms.\u201d<br \/>\nSaterdagmiddag stap ek uiteindelik my huis binne. Terug na drie vlugte tussen die Kaap en Johannesburg in minder as 24 uur. Ek is wyser:<strong> soms moet mens beheer verloor om beheer te behou<\/strong>. Die Maagd knik.
