Ek het dit gedink\u00a0dit sal makliker wees om die produk wat erdwurms vervaardig humus<\/strong> te noem, maar dit is egter nie heeltemal korrek nie. Sien, dit werk so: \u2019n Baie groot deel van die organiese materiaal wat in die grond beland, word deur mikro-organismes afgebreek om minerale vry te stel sodat plante dit kan opnneem. Op hierdie manier word stikstof herwin. Dit staan bekend as die stikstofsiklus. Dieselfde geld vir ander\u00a0voedingstowwe. Dit staan bekend as die voedingstofsiklus. Die hele proses staan dan bekend as mineralisasie. \u2019n Gedeelte van die organiese materiaal mineraliseer nie, maar vorm nuwe organiese kettings, genaamd polimere. Hierdie polimere is stabiel en weerstandbiedig teen die aksies van mikro-organismes en is dan die donkerbruin of swart gronddeeltjies bekend as humus. Humus bestaan dus nie meer uit selle soos plante en diere nie, maar dit is steeds organies. Dit speel \u2019n groot rol in die verbetering van grondgehalte en verbeter onder andere die deurlugting en waterhouvermo\u00eb van grond.<\/p>\n

Volgens Rupert van der Merwe van Probio<\/a> bevorder gesonde grond gesonde plantgroei. Maar dis nie waar dit eindig nie – wat ons eet, be\u00efnvloed die genetiese potensiaal as mense en diere. Ten einde \u2019n gesonde immuunstelsel op te bou, sal ons moet kyk na die opbou en instandhouding van gesonde grond.<\/p>\n
